The University of Nigeria, UNN has had towering achievements so much that many people expect nothing from her apart from excellence in every sphere. However, so many first time visitors have revealed their frustration over what they saw in the main campus of the university. Let’s look at the TOP DISAPPOINTMENTS VISITORS ARE FACED WITH IN UNN:

1: SHABBY NATURE OF HER FIRST GATE AND SECOND GATE ENTRANCE: Every University in the world makes aesthetics its first port of call as far as their main entrance is concerned. But it’s somewhat disappointing that this is not the case for UNN. Making entrance into the University through the first gate, one is faced with a shabby tower, almost overtaken by ageing rust causing a sour sight on the boldly inscribed University of Nigeria. As one approaches further towards the gate, the security cave under this tower gives the entrance a crabbier outlook.

The second entrance which is opposite JIVES is popularly regarded as the Second Gate. Probably because this is not the official entrance of UNN, this place, starting from the Newspaper stand, the Okada stand, through the security checkpoint is in a deplorable state. With untarred road circling this entrance, cars are most times forced to scramble for the less pot-holed areas of this entrance.

2: POOR COVERAGE OF THE UNIVERSITY ROUTES BY SHUTTLE/CAB: As directed by the school administration, there are some strategic routes UNN shuttles are not to cover. For instance, if one is on a visit to places like the PG school, GS building, Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts from the First gate, one will either be dropped at the Christ church bus stop or Library bus stop. This forces people to trek almost a mile or more to get to their destination. So many people, especially the elderly with ageing legs are disappointed with this arrangement.

3: POOR WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM: I think this should be ranked number one on this list. A yard or two into the school through the second gate axis of UNN, you are greeted with a respiratory damaging stench coming off the mountainous heap of debris at Kwameh Nkrumah hostel. Mixed with this stench is the one coming from the soakaway pit of Odili hall flanking the road by the left. In fact, a first-time visit to the male undergraduate hostels will leave one struggling for untainted air. The number of weeks, it takes for the waste disposal workers to clean up this debris is really uncalled for. The most annoying part of this is the debris that now disturbs the relaxation of postgraduate students in their quadrangle (love garden). Gone are the days when postgraduate students relaxed in the quadrangle in their numbers without flies threatening them with their incessant buzz.

4: POOR STRUCTURE: Good infrastructure is one of the hallmarks of every university. This is because good infrastructure contributes a lot to the academic success of students. However, the all purportedly glamorous University of Nigeria can hardly boast of good infrastructure. From the crabbiness of Eni Njoku hostel, Alvan Ikoku Hostel, Kwame Nkrumah Hostel through the wretchedly pose of some uncompleted buildings in the university, UNN first-time visitors are usually taken aback at the poor state of her infrastructure with wide-mouthed disbelief.

The above are few out of many damaging top disappointments visitors are faced with in UNN. You can add your using the comment space below.

OP is right. But there are other things that'll excite any visitor to the prestigious University of Nigeria Nsukka. These include, the faculty of arts gallery of sculptures and edifices, and the towering Nnamdi Azikiwe library reputed to be the best in West Africa amongst others.

The catch of the school is not in it's aesthetics but in the values and knowledge it offers. A UNN graduate is spectacular anywhere he/she goes, and this is not for the beauty of the school or the lack of it.

Each institution in the world have one or two drawbacks. You did a good job in the research which I think the administration of the school is also making ways to ensure this lapses are met.

As for the school main gate, note that the school also have new main gate at Nru, some long distance from the campus centre. Making it two main gates.

The den will restore its glory soon.
