Implementing An Information System In Hospitals: The Good And Bad Side by codemint: 3:52pm On Sep 19, 2018
As the quest to globally enhance the method of communication and information holds sway, the equal need to implement them in the various sectors of human endeavor has also increased relatively. This has also largely influenced and motivated the need for a hospital information system as part of improving the administrative efforts of the health sector. Series of project topics for computer science students within the past few years have identified functional need for implementing such software locally and globally.

Prior to these days of machine learning and artificial intelligence, hospitals have relied mostly on manual information recording tools like book keeping, filing and recording, etc. Lately however, the need for a technologically inspired information means has arisen to a very large extent, but not without lapses.

While the implementation of a health information system is not a bad idea at all, it has a number of set-backs that could hinder quick adaptation to these tech facilities.

So why is a hospital information system necessary in the first place?

Increases frequency of service delivery:
Usually, medical attendants take to moving from one hospital ward to the other to have the health state of patients recorded. This is quite stressful and time consuming.

A hospital information system largely facilitates the number of patients given attention in a day. Do you know that some patients do not get to see a nurse when they need them almost on daily bases? but with this, a nurse could monitor the health state of every patient in the hospital and offer needed help as at when necessary.

Increases revenue:
Time is money in business. For the fact that hospitals make money from their services simply makes it a business. However, time taken to attend to individual patients could hinder the admission of more sick patients.

When all the wards are occupied, the next option is to “move to another hospital”. This also boils down to the level of service delivery. If the service delivery is slow, it will affect the revenue generation.

Whereas a hospital information system is implemented, the revenue stream of the health sector will be improved.

Improved administrative service
As mentioned earlier, manual method of record keeping is pains taking and generally stressful. Hospital information system upgrades the nature of record keeping, facilitates information from patients to nurses, increases service delivery and general administrative activities in the health sector.

But what lapses could hinder this great idea

Low user experience
Truth be told, technology have not entirely reached the door steps of everyone’s knowledge. It seems as though it lies in the confines of the rich and powerful. Therefore, implementing such technology in health facilities would require backup education and enlightenment on how to use these tools, precisely for patients.

Quite expensive to acquire and afford
This sort of health facility is associated invariably with machine learning and artificial intelligence. While it may not be cumbersome for some private medical facilities to acquire, it is relatively expensive for users or patients to afford the bills.

Maintenance
Maintenance is usually very pain taking when it comes to tech facilities. It becomes more challenges it the place of implementation is distant from the place of purchase.
Secondly, such facility may need the attention of trained personnel on frequent bases which boils down to some extra cost.

It is bound to fail
While technology is largely very efficient, it’s subject to failure without human supervision.

In conclusion, a hospital information system is never a bad idea but it seems as though it is better embraced in technically advanced societies. Moreso, as much as artificial intelligence has found its way into the daily discuss, it is really expensive to implement.
