Julius Berger: How N257bn Abuja Road Project was Inflated

From Onwuka Nzeshi in Abuja, 07.07.2010

The connivance  between contractors  and government officials in the negative practice of over-invoicing in procurement contracts came to the fore yesterday as construction giant, Julius Berger narrated how the contract for the expansion of  the Abuja Airport Road and Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) Project was inflated by as much as N2billion.

The revelation came just as the Debt Management Office (DMO) gave reasons why the Federal Government jettisoned the initial Public Private Participation (PPP) arrangement on the road project and undertook to bear the entire cost.

Managing Director, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Engr. Wolfgang Goetsch testified on the alleged “padding” of the controversial project at the House of Representatives. He gave his testimony before an Ad-Hoc Committee of the House which opened investigations into the processes leading to the award of contracts.

According to Goetsch, whereas the company made bids of N58.6billion and N48 billion for Lots 1 and 2 of the road project, the contracts were awarded to the company at the cost of N59.2 billion and N49billion respectively.
He, however, attributed the additional sum on the contract cost to “mathematical errors” and requested for some time to enable him reconcile the figures.

The MD of Julius Berger needs the 'quietness' and isolation of a Kirikiri jail, adjacent to Bode George's, for him to recalculate the mathematical errors of Julius Berger in Nigeria!

Is it ever possible to award a contract at a cost higher than the bidded rate even when there are no variations? They have simply topped each contract with #1billion and now the man is talking of mathematical errors. He should go and tell that to the marines.

And that top-up does not include the 'padding' that already went into the bidded amounts of N58.6Bn and N48Bn!

N-a-i-j-a!!!

This kind of situation is why 419 emerged.419 was born as a result of the corrupt practices of nigerian government and multinational companies like julius beger

The proceeds from the over inflated needs be lodged in a safe account abroad and that is where the mugu comes in to reap where he or she did not sow.

Never blame the player, blame the game.

So are you saying alll this years, they have making computer error with all thier project.

we all know the extra 200 billion were kick back or bribe. That why people kill and hire paid killer to become president and governor.

The first thing for running for president is to hire paid killers. It is not like the Hillary and obama election.

Obama would have killed Hillary for daring to run against him. that is how nigeria election is. They would try to frame you using anything they can even using non nigerian and institution. even using interpol if they think you may win against them in an election.

Now how many paid killer did obama hired against his opponent.

It is bribe that make them do this thing./ In nigeria if someone becomes a president in 7 days. He would be richer than Donald trump.  I mean only 7 days.  Most nigerian dream just to be president for 1 days just because of bribe.
that why they kill themself.
