NCC Urges Nigerians To Protect Telecom Infrastructure by Paulline: 10:05am On Sep 27, 2018
Nigerians have been urged to desist from vandalising telecom infrastructure. This call was made yesterday in Lokoja at a 'One Day Sensitisation Programme On Protection Of Telecom Infrastructure' , organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Zonal Operations Department, NCC, Ms Helen Obi said the protection of telecom infrastructure is a collective responsibility, she noted that the telecom sector has contributed a lot, 'it is worth emphasizing that over the past 15 years, we have experienced tremendous growth in this sector and a significant contribution to the Nigeria's GDP.'

Ms Obi also admitted that there are some challenges pervading the seamless provision of telecom services in the country rising from misconception and misguided facts about key telecom infrastructure such as Base Transceiver Station (BTS), power supply and others. She however added that with the Commission's pervasive drive to achieve 30% Broadband Penetration by the end of the 2018, it becomes a collective responsibility for the public to ensure that they protect and report any telecom vandalism to security agencies and NCC's zonal offices.

'As we are aware, telecommunication has been an integral part of our daily lives with provision of services ranging from telephony, entertainment, information and learning over a broad range of media platform , she added.

Mr. Lawal Bello of Technical Standard and Network Integrity said that the Federal Government of Nigeria recently sponsored a bill before the National Assembly geared towards ensuring that telecom infrastructure in the country are protected and seen as national asset.

He further said that Nigeria needs about 80,000 Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) to be able to
provide optimum services to the growing telecom consumers.

He however urged Nigerians to protect telecom infrastructure stressing that the spate of telecom vandalism across the country has slowed the pace of growth.

The Nigerian Communications Commission( NCC), is the independent national regulatory authority for the telecommunication industry in Nigeria. The Commission is responsible for creating an enabling environment for competition among operators, the Commission is also responsible for technical regulations of telecom industry in line with international best practices.
