The issue of player power in football has become a norm in recent times with Chelsea FC most infamous for it. During the early rebirth of the club under Russian billionaire Roman Abramovic there were several high profile fall outs between players and managers with Fillipe Scolari being fired after a gang up by certain big names at the club as the likes of Drogba and Lampard were unhappy with his brand of play and it was just early into the former Brazilian coach’s tenure in February precisely that the world Cup winner got the sack. Carlo Ancelotti took over at the end of the season with his gentleman approach and was initially loved by all his players as his team won the double breaking the goal record in the Premier League but his second season was marred in disappointed as Chelsea suffered an exit in the Champions League in the quarter final stage to Manchester United and lost out on other competitions as they finished third in the league.

It had seemed the Italian was dismissed on football grounds solely till much later Carlo Ancelotti revealed that he had a dispute with his captain John Terry labelling him disrespectful and that he couldn’t deal with him because the club considered him their personal belonging.

As Andre Villas Boas came on board he was fresh with ideas as he had just guided FC Porto to a mickey mouse treble winning the League, the FA Cup in Portugal and then the Uefa Cup now called Europa League but lasted just 9 months as there was a player rebellion in the camp and the young tactician was dismissed despite a promise being made to him by Roman Abramovic that he will not be sacked too early.

For Chelsea it was always the case as when Jose Mourinho returned for his second stint and in his second season he fell out with big names including Eva Caniero the club’s doctor and despite having a long time on paper he was chased away as the problems had escalated beyond repair with Chelsea now almost in the relegation zone after a terrible start to the campaign. Mourinho’s disaster cost Chelsea the league again as they finished 10th as Guus Hiddink was put in charge on interim basis till the end of the season.



Manchester United always felt it was never gonna happen at the club with Sir Alex Ferguson at the helm of the affairs. There were cases of player disobedience with Paul Ince a major case which saw him offloaded to Italy and much later David Beckham whose relationship with singer Victoria had upset his manager. Ferguson infamously kicked a boot on his forehead during the team talk after a game against Arsenal blaming him for not concentrating while they conceded. Beckham was sold to Real Madrid at the end. Former club captain Roy Keane had his after questioning the team’s performance in their Champions League defeat to Lille and was sacked by the club after he held a damning interview where he slated his team mates.
