The former governor of Zamfara State and serving member of the Nigerian Senate, Ahmed Sani Yerima, is to face prosecution for allegedly committing an "act of child marriage", Simon Egede, the Executive Secretary of NAPTIP has said.

According to Mr. Egede the speculation that the agency is reluctant to prosecute the senator is not true. He said the agency does not have the right to prosecute such cases, but has concluded its investigation and forwarded its findings to the office of the Attorney general of the federation.

"Let me use this opportunity to clear the issue on senator Yerima. As you know, we investigated the case and at the end of the investigation, the report was shown to me," Mr. Egede said.

"The report shows clearly that he committed an offence; the offence shown or disclosed is the act of child marriage. It is not true that NAPTIP found him not guilty of any offence or NAPTIP did not find him liable of no primer face.

"The truth of the matter is that we found that there were evidence of investigation but not that he trafficked the young lady or that there is any abuse or other offence under the NAPTIP act, but there was a discovery of an offence under the child right act.

NAPTIP is not the legal authority to prosecute offence under the child right act, in the same way that NAPTIP does not prosecute armed robbery, does not prosecute rape, does not prosecute kidnapping. So we are not saying that there is no evidence that he has committed an offence, we are saying offence he committed is not an offence under the NAPTIP Act."


However, Mr. Egede said that "the rightful authority which is the Attorney-General of the federation, has received the report of the investigation" and that "the report has been forwarded to him for prosecution or he can give NAPTIP the charge to prosecute."
