ENTROPION

OVERVIEW
this is an Ocular condition , whereby there is an inward folding of the eyelid margin. this causes the the eyelid and lashes to touch the anterior segment of the eye resulting to discomfort and irritation. it mostly affect the lower lid. it affect all ages but it is mostly seen in Adults .

we have
i. involuntary entropion relating to age
ii. cicatrical entropion , which is as a result of scarring of the palpebral.

if not recognised and treated , it may cover the entire front surface of the eye, it may lead to eye infection as well as visual impairment

COMMON CAUSES

1. Genetic Factor

2.Muscle weakness which is as a result of Old age .

3. Infection: certain infection such as Trachoma( talk about it later ) seen mostly in developing Countries often cause scarring of the inner lid leading to Entropion

4.inflammation: irritation of the eye caused from inflammation can lead to an effort to relieve the symptoms by rubbing the eyelids or squeezing them shut. This can lead to a spasm of the eyelid muscles and a rolling of the edge of the lid inward against the cornea

SYMPTOMS
you may experience
1.The feeling that something is in your eye
2.Eye redness
3. Eye irritation or pain
4. Sensitivity to light and wind
5, Watery eyes (excessive tearing)
6.Mucous discharge and eyelid crusting
7. Decreased vision

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
With out wasting Further time, You should see a doctor when you experience 2 or more of the symptoms especially unusual folding of the Lid. for Proper check up.

TREATMENT
treatment depends on the type of entropion
We have non surgical and surgical treatment

Non surgical treatment includes

1. Use of Contact Lenses:
this is to prevent the Lashes from rubbing on the cornea, the conjunctiva and the sclera
2. Use of stitches:
this is done with local Anaesthesia. it involves the use of stitches to turn the lid outward. the scars tissues from the stitches , causes the lid to be outward after removal, However after some months it tends to turn inward again
3. Botox:
A small Amount of botulinum toxin {BTX} when injected into the lid can turn it outward .
4. Skin tape:
Special transparent skin tape can be applied to your eyelid to keep it from turning in

Surgical treatment
this is best and appropriate form of Treatment because it
i. helps the eyes to properly lubricate again
ii. eliminates most the problems
iii. helps to remove a tiny portion of your lower eyelid which will help you to tighten the infected tendons and muscles of the eye socket
