Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said that Nigeria cannot claim to be celebrating Independence as a nation when Leah Sharibu and over 100 Chibok schoolgirls are still in captivity.

The president, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, therefore urged the Federal Government to work harder and get them released before it is too late.In his message on Nigeria’s 58th Independence anniversary yesterday in Abuja, Ayokunle lamented that Nigerians not only witnessed daily shedding of blood, but also had kidnappers who abduct people and would only release them after payment of ransom.

He stressed the need to uphold the principles of justice, fairness and righteousness to move the country forward. “Some of our roads have become very dangerous to pass through as a result of the rampaging kidnappers on our highways. Also, we have the armed robbers terrorising commuters from time to time. We thank the police and other law enforcement agents for the little they are able to do.

“However, we are also charging the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to do more to fish out the bad eggs among the police who connive with the armed groups to perpetrate mayhem,” he said.

The CAN leader noted that workers were not being paid salaries as and when due, while many were not even paid for months. He added: “Electricity supply is erratic, undependable, till now, despite that we hear billions of naira being spent to bring about regular supply of electricity.“Many adults like us, who lived in this country in the better days, continue to ask what brought us where we are today. The answer might be lack of justice, fairplay and righteousness in our land.”
