Everybody loves a rags to riches entrepreneur; the unexpected genius from the remote village that built a start-up worth millions. Such stories, valid as they sometimes may be, fuel the myth of the entrepreneur, blurring the realities more closely associated with running your own business. What other myths lie on the path to start-up glory?

MYTHING POINTS
‘Investor capital is a must for success’. On the surface, one of the truer myths. While no business enterprise can succeed without funding, the funding craze paints a chaotic picture of the start-up scene and distracts would-be entrepreneurs from recognizing a broader definition of “capital”. The myth is mainly perpetuated through fear – knowing that successful start-up A raised $1 million in round B of funding understandably raises the temperature.

LEADERS ARE WOUNDED HEALERS
While in your Youth Leadership Network, a sister starts giving you signs of wanting to come close. She wants something more than just being a friend, she wants a relationship. You tell yourself, ‘I don’t think I want a relationship now’. Your simple reason is that there can’t be romance without finance.

The sister thinks you’ve got all it takes, because she sees you appearing crisp, neat and smart. You make a meaningful contribution, whenever it comes to donation and strategy. She gets closer and you decided to take a shot to have a relationship with her. The relationship gets enlivened and you feel it should continue that way. You forget about the frustration of raising N500,000, the fact that others are looking to you to solve their problem and that you don’t have a job.

STRATEGIES FOR MAKING THE RIGHT DECISIONS
Olu is a 27-year-old entrepreneur building his own business in one of Lagos’ metropolitan cities. He wakes up one morning and decides to dress casually to the office for that day (routine decision?). In the afternoon, his office assistant asks him what he wants for lunch, and he says ‘beans, egg and some slices of bread’ (another routine decision?). During dinner at night, he decides with his wife—a psychology lecturer at a university—on how to go about a loan he just obtained from one of the city’s bank (major decision?)

Like Olu, every day, everybody makes decisions: what to wear, where to go, how much to spend, what to do, when to do what, etc. Obviously, decision making is an indispensable part of our living. However, as Alice Waters says, the decisions we make are choices of values that reflect in our lives in every way.

On the other hand, we tend to make hasty and unwise decisions frequently. Because humans can be so spontaneous, sometimes, the decisions we make are not very well thought out.
