No matter the form of business you run, there are always some common important policies to implement to secure your business. These policies can make or break your business.
When developing your business policy, you must put into consideration these important policies to implement to secure your business. They include:

1. Separation of Duties Policies.
A good business implements policies which require that multiple staff handle vital operations. This implies that, for instance, the person in charge of order processing should not handle billing, and so on.
Separation of duties policies are important policies to implement to secure your business as they help reduce your business’ susceptibility to fraudulent activities as well as other critical loses. It prevents embezzlement because to succeed at this, separation of duties policy in place means that many staff must be in on the theft, not just one person. These policies also help to minimize human error.

2. Least Privilege Policy
When assigning permissions, you must implement the *least* privilege policy. This simply implies that you assign employees only the permissions and privileges that they need to do their work and nothing more. For example, a receptionist should not have the right to install software or make backups.
All computer operating systems allows the administrator to assign privileges and permissions to individual users or groups of users.

3. Acceptable Use Policies (AUP).
These policies outline the acceptable use of company systems and resources, as well as the consequences for misusing them. For example, you might need to restrict the installation of staff personal hardware or software on company computers.

4. Mandatory Vacation Policy
This policy requires that you mandate all employees to take some time off from work. It may seem conflicting, but these are important policies to implement to secure your business. Lack of vacations can lead to fatigue, which can affect not just the employee’s health, but also that of the company.

Mandatory vacations give the employee time to refresh, and it also allows the company time to refresh from a particular employee, as it helps reaffirm that a specific role or gap can be handled in the absence of a particular employee. Also, mandatory vacations have been discovered to help businesses discover frauds.

5. Privacy Policies.
These are legal documents that outline how your business collects and secures customer and staff data. These are not just important policies to implement to secure your business, but most times, they are mandatory.
The privacy policy document outlines the exact data or information your business collects, security measures implemented to secure this data, users’ privacy options, information on data shared with third parties, and so on. It is crucial that the last paragraph of every good privacy policy states in clear terms how the policy may change. For example:

"Please note that this Privacy Policy may change from time to time. We will not reduce your rights under this Privacy Policy without your explicit consent. We will not post any Privacy Policy changes on this page and, if the changes are significant, we will provide a more prominent notice (including, for certain services, email notification of Privacy Policy changes). We will also keep prior versions of this Privacy Policy in an archive for your review."

6. Security Policies.
These sets of policies state the measures required to implement and maintain the security of company networks, systems, as well as human resources. Security policies should guide system implementations and auditing.

7. Job Rotation Policy.
Another important policy to implement to secure your business is a job rotation policy. This policy defines intervals at which employees must rotate through positions and roles. The advantages of a job rotation policy are similar to those of the mandatory vacation policy.
There are many important policies to implement to secure your business, and they are based on the nature of business. The policies outlined above are however the primary ones every business must implement.
