Over 19 Emirs from the two critical zones in northern Nigeria-North West and North East regions, being affected by the issue of Out-of-School children are set to sign the ‘Commitment for action’ on 10th-11th October, 2018 in Kaduna to take further and faster action to address the issue of children not in school.

The Emir of Argugu, Kebbi State, Samaila Mera, who addressed Journalists, yesterday in Abuja, during a pre-conference briefing on the event said with about 10.5 million Nigerian children not in school, the meeting becomes necessary.

He said the meeting, which is being organised, by UNICEF, Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Sultan Foundation For Peace and Development, is seeking the support of traditional rulers in northern Nigeria to end the issue of children roaming the streets.

According to him, “Each of the participating Emirs will sign a commitment for Action, signifying his commitment to ensuring that all children out of school within his emirate council are reached and enrolled in school.”

The UBEC representative, Bello Kagara, who is the director of Social Mobilisation at the commission, said involving traditional rulers who are the custodians of tradition would play a big role in changing the negative issues.

On his part, the UNICEF Chief in Nigeria, Terry Durnian, said the conference is looking at the issues and what can be done to make change, adding that UNICEF would continue to look after the welfare of children as its core mandate.

The northern Emirs and leaders should assist government in stopping Boko Haram, which is going about in their Jihad against "western education", which to them is evil.
That is the first decisive step they are to take in curbing this impending calamity.
Jonathan saw this and started building Almajiri schools for them, but unfortunately they voted him out, and from the look of things, the present government seems to be more focused on other issues.
Now they are struggling to start doing what somebody was doing for them wilingly.
