2019 Presidency: Afenifere Meets Obasanjo, May Adopt Atiku by BeeBeeOoh(m): 4:59am On Oct 10, 2018
Strong indications emerged yesterday that the pan Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, may adopt former Vice President Abubakar Atiku as its presidential candidate for the forthcoming general election.

Spokesman of the group, Yinka Odumakin, dropped the hint yesterday while speaking with journalists shortly after a closed-door meeting of his group with former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Speaking with journalists, Odumakin said the primary aim of Afenifere’s meeting with Obasanjo was to appreciate the former president who had earlier paid a visit to the leader of the group, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Lagos.

However, when asked to comment on the position of the group regarding the forthcoming general election and whether the group had adopted any presidential candidate, Odumakin declared that the paramount concern of the group was how to restructure the country, an idea being championed by Atiku Abubakar.

“The 2019 election is going to be interesting, the most important thing for us is restructuring and clearly you should know that Afenifere will always support a candidate that is ready to restructure the country because without restructuring we are going nowhere.

“We have heard someone saying that the report of the year 2014 Confab has been thrown into the archives and you have also heard somebody saying that how Nigeria can be restructured is part of his business.

“So, the choice is clear. We are going to make the pronouncement very soon for all to know where the pendulum will swing,” he said.

Led by Pa Adebanjo, the Afenifere delegation had, on their arrival, gone into a closed-door meeting with the former president which lasted close to three hours.

Those in the delegation included Senator Femi Okunrounmu, Professor Banji Akintoye, Ambassador Tokunbo Dosunmu-Awolowo, Amos Akingba, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Mrs Modupe Adelaja and Oladipupo Olaitan.

Briefing newsmen, Odumakin explained that Afenifere was visiting the former president as a way of furthering the spirit of friendship earlier established and to enable Nigerians know “that leaders across divides are coming together to discuss the way forward.

“Some few months ago, former President Obasanjo came to Lagos to visit Pa Ayo Adebanjo and we discussed some issues. Today we are here to as well visit him and appreciate his visit to Lagos the other time. We are trying to further the friendship so that there can be harmony in Yoruba land so that our people will know that leaders across divides are coming together to discuss the way forward”.

Afenifere lost relevance after the June 12 saga, they are now a retirement home for some Yoruba politicians.

Afenifere have always been for restructuring if atiku can sign a binding agreement towards that regards he will not only get the support of afenifere but also Niger delta, ohanaeze, middle belt and arewa group.

Atikulate seems to be the realist option against the lifeless one.

restructuring should be Nigerians main discuss. it's not something to gamble with. anything outside of that is unacceptable. atiku should be made to sign that he would restructure the country.

Their adoption of Atiku is not conditional on meeting with Obasanjo. Afenifere has two camps, those who support the rulingg party and those who support opposition. The opposition is Yinka. They have always sided with pdp, as opposition camp thats their call. So why the razzmatazz about supporting Atiku after meeting Obasanjo. Before nko, who will the opposition camp support? grin

Just wait till the campaigns kick off to know if Nigerians are truly angry with this government or not. APC’s popularity will be tested in Lagos. Buhari’s cult following will also be tested in many parts of the north. Who no know go know.

No single individual controls Nigeria, It takes deals to win elections and for the most part, Atiku is ready to do what it takes

Afenifere that has not effected any political change in the SW since 2015 trying to stay relevant.

In 2015, they supported GEJ, he lost.

All the parties this group has supported against Tinubu-led APC in the SW have always lost since they parted ways.

2019 is the last battle to rescue Nigeria from the "owners" of the country.

Meanwhile, OBJ cannot even win his polling booth in any election in the SW. Such is his political weight.

God is really wonderful and indeed he answers prayers.
in 2017 arsene wenger was arsenal's coach and arsenal was loosing matches and not competing. Rochas was also the governor of my state and buhari the president.
but today wenger has gone and arsenal has started getting the good results, Rochas will also leave in the next couple of months and as for buhari things are looking that buhari will go too.

Good God please complete the good work.

They've never never lost relevance, because they are still a voice to reckon with from the SW region. I don't think you understand the word restructuring, which is coming handy at a time like this in the history of Nigeria, its going to give complete balancing in all regions.

EMERGENCE OF ATIKU AND BUHARI'S CHANCE OF WINNING 2019 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN PERSPECTIVE!
It is no longer news that Buhari is the candidate of APC while Atiku is the candidate of PDP in 2019. It is also a known fact that both men are in their 70s, they are both Fulanis, Muslims and Herdsmen. Nigerians are now faced with a very narrow choice to make.
While Buhari is of APC, Atiku is of PDP. Before 2015, a choice of party would have made a lot of difference in this election but after almost 4 years of APC, I am now of a firm opinion that there is no difference between APC and PDP. Apart from logo difference of broom and umbrella, both parties use the same colour, both parties are run by same men who are merely criss-crossing the two parties. I have not seen any ideological differences in the way both parties run things.
Both parties don't know the feelings of the masses and don't believe in the power of the people. Both parties believed in using impunity in doing things. Both parties imposed candidates, both parties conjured figures and rigg elections to sweet their purposes, both parties have almost the same ideology. Therefore, the winner of 2019 Presidential election would be determined not by ideology as the two parties are one and the same and can only be described as two sides of same coin.
2019 election would largely be determined by a number of factors which include the way APC/Buhari has kept to the promises they made to Nigerians in 2014 and 2015. Nigerians will look around to see whether power has improved. APC promised 40k megawatts in 4 years. Nigeria will see whether there is improvement. APC promised creation of jobs and poverty reduction. Nigeria will look at what the government has achieved in this regard. APC promised to bring an end to medical tourism, Nigerians will see whether this has been achieved. APC promised affordable housing for all, Nigerians will take a look at this sector.
On the part of PDP, Nigerians will cast their minds back to pre PMB era and make a choice whether to continue with PMB or take a detour with their destinies. Nigerians will look at the era of Boko Haram and bombing in Abuja, Sulajah etc. Nigerians will look at job creation and poverty reduction or otherwise. Nigerians will look at the economy as it then was and see whether it was worthwhile then and whether it is better today. Nigerians will look at the achievements of the governors of both parties where the held sway in the various States.
I have noticed the Trend of Buhari campaign Media organisation and their approach at trying to demarket Atiku. I wish to state without mincing words that the approach of trying to label Atiku as corrupt, not being able to visit America, spent money to get nomination is a bad approach. Nigerians will not buy that. This same Atiku donated vehicles and cash to PMB in 2015 and those gifts were collected without anyone making issue that Atiku is corrupt. My reason is that both candidates are of same origin, they both spent money to get nominated. Nobody can get a party ticket in Nigeria without spending money. Even with Direct Primary of PMB, money was still spent on nomination even though in some states where the exercise did not take place, the money entered private pockets.
I have also noted the approach of PDP in selling their market to Nigerians. I have not seen much insults being rained on Mr. President. They are only asking his handlers for his achievements in the last 3 and half years. This is not to say that insults are still not being passed. But their approach is better.
I wish to call on the two sides to make the 2019 campaign robust and issue based, Nigerians now have statistical data about the two parties and the two gladiators. It is a great achievement for Fulanis in Nigeria to have their own nominated by the two major political parties and I congratulate them for this feat achieved. Head or tail, is Fulani-Muslim, so why should we make enemies for ourselves in the contest of two brothers of same parent just because we want to campaign for our party? Other Nigerians shoud be wiser and follow the campaign based on issue with peace. May God give Nigeria the best in 2019.
