FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS Professional Vacancy Announcement No: 1604-FII Deadline For Application: 19 April 2007 Position Title Fishery Industry Officer (Small Scale Fishing Technology) Duty Station HQ Grade Level P-4 Duration Fixed Term: 3 years CCOG Code: 1H05 Organizational Unit Fishery Technology Service, FIIT Fish Products and Industry Division, FII Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, FI DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general supervision of the Service Chief, and the immediate supervision of the Senior Fishery Industry Officer, will be responsible for providing technical support to and participating in the implementation of policies and work programmes related to the development of sustainable fisheries management tools and technologies primarily - though not exclusively - for small-scale fisheries. More specifically, to: Develop guidelines and information material for more responsible fishing practices referring to the implementation of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries; Design and implement programmes and projects; co-ordinate joint activities and participate in task forces; as required participate in the formulation and appraisal of field projects, the recruitment and technical supervision of field staff and provide technical backstopping; Manage the co-ordination and exchange of information on technical matters, within and outside the Organization including Member Governments and fishery bodies; Organize, promote and conduct training courses and workshops on fishing gear selectivity, sustainable fishing and management methods; Develop training and technical material on improved safety and efficiency of small-scale fishing operations; Prepare and/or edit technical documents and reference works on the above subjects for discussion and/or publication, including textbooks for training fisheries technologists and fishers in responsible fishing methods and operations; Participate in the elaboration of tools, guidelines and methodologies for improved efficiency in small-scale fisheries post harvest systems; assist FAO Members and Regional Fishery Bodies in their programmes through reviews and the provision of policy and technical advice; Participate in missions, task forces and negotiating review teams; Carry out case studies, and draft guidelines and approaches for improved disaster preparedness and impact assessment in fishing communities; Prepare briefs and comprehensive reports; Perform other duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should meet the following: University degree in Fishing Technology/Fishery Science or related discipline Seven years of relevant experience in the fields of artisanal/industrial fisheries, including experience in research and development of fishing technology Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two SELECTION CRITERIA Candidates will be assessed against the following: Relevance of experience in planning, implementing and coordinating fishing development related programme activities with particular reference to small-scale fisheries Knowledge of and experience in broad aspects of fishing technology, gear selectivity, and ability to analyse related technical and scientific information Working experience and ability to negotiate with international organizations/agencies Ability to write clearly and concisely, edit technical papers for publication and make effective oral presentations Ability to organize and coordinate meetings and training activities Strong initiative and high sense of responsibility and ability to work under pressure Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. * The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments.
