According to a report by Time Magazine (June 24, 2001) which was one of many sources that documented Buhari's regime as a dictator, Buhari’s anti-corruption fight of 1983 was ineffective and aimed at hounding political opponents and the press. He failed to revive the economy as promised.

Read this excerpt below:

"Nigerians had watched despairingly as the Buhari regime's promises to revive the economy and wipe out rampant corruption withered during 20 months of heavy-handed, largely ineffective rule. Last May, Buhari ordered the brutal expulsion of 700,000 illegal immigrants from neighboring African states, jailed hundreds of political opponents and muzzled a once aggressive press." http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,142380,00.html (note here**: copy and paste the full link including the ,9171,142380,00.html because nairaland is modifying the url automatically)

How then did Buhari fail as a dictator, but many Nigerians Do Not Know?

The answers lie on a damning Newspaper report published by New York Times on Dec 21, 1984 about the Buhari led government of 1983. According to the NYT report which highlighted a statement by the International Press Institute (comprising over 2,000 reporters from 60 countries), Buhari's government severely restricted Nigeria Press, described as the once freest press in Africa, and jailed many journalists for publishing stories that appeared to embarrass his government (under Decree 4). https://www.nytimes.com/1984/12/21/world/press-freedom-withers-report-says.html

Why are These Reports Important today?

It is important to highlight that Buhari's civilian government of 2018 is very similar to his military government of 1983. The major difference, however, is that in 1983, the Nigerian Press was silenced so that they could not inform Nigerians about the failures and ineffectiveness of the Buhari government, now it comes to Nigerians as a surprise because they think of him as an anti-corruption leader when in fact he wasn't. The economy failed under his government and his anti-corruption fight was in fact a charade aimed at political opponents and the press. Buhari forcefully jailed political opponents at will through military courts without fair hearing and effective legal representation, there were raids and suspected "evidence planting" during his military rule (as a way of convincing the public) which today have become more difficult for him to replicate due to a more active and vibrant press

Facts Do Not Lie

Today, Nigerians have seen how ineffective, secretive and selective president Buhari's government is about corruption fight. Could it be that the government has no serious corruption case against many of those it accused of looting the treasury? Why all the secrecy? Nigerians have no clue of who returned what and where or how the funds were utilized. Interesting because any government would pride itself with its anti-corruption efforts and would gladly shame politicians who are guilty of corruption. The NNPC and Oil and Gas probe withered without trace, even new cases of corruption (like the $43 million discovered in a Lagos apartment) have gone underground.

Buhari's anti-corruption fight was a charade in 1983, and still a charade in 2018

God Bless Nigeria.

Everyone knows except those getting paid by his administration. Check his actions towards any corruption allegations involving his cabinet members, that will show you the true colour of the man.

The only thing good about the man is that he is an ethnic and Islamic bigot. He rose to fa by bigotry. Check his followers in the North, the vast majority are are the worse of the worse. Those that can not read, all they do is go to the mosque and thereafter go and beg for alms

Buhari that together with TY Danjuma murdered a sitting Head of State.

You people made him president. And now because the rest of us are afraid of dying in his 2nd term.

We want to vote him out.

On behalf of all the innocent people who were killed in this useless administration.

I PRAY HE WINS NEXT YEAR AGAIN!

those surprised about pmb's style of leadership are those who are too lazy to do any research.

as bad as the restriction of press freedom was back then, there were enough indications to show that he was a sham.

the 1st major corruption case Nigeria had in the oil sector was the $2.8b missing oil revenue at the time PMB was commissioner for oil (minister for petroleum). that matter was a burning issue.

however, for a man who was so 'uncorrupted', one would have thought that his 1st act would be to prove the missing billions to either fully clear his name or at least punish those responsible...

but alas, nothing was done. rather, documents relating to the matter suddenly went missing...

similar thing happened during his time as head honcho ptf...

Very correct, Many red flags were overlooked in 2015 out of anger and enthusiasm, not anymore. Experience, they say, is the best teacher!

A man that never improved his intellectual capacity since 1984. He will come out every 4 years and cry to be voted.

This isn't 2015 as many reasonable Nigerians have seen through his crass incompetence and lifelessness.

His embarrassment will be at the poll. A lifeless idiot who accidentally tumbled into power.
