By Okechukwu Onuegbu Victims of flood in Anambra State currently occupying the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp at Crowder Memorial Primary School, Onitsha have bemoaned the unavailability of drugs to address their health challenges in the camp.
The IDP, Orient Daily gathered, was experiencing hunger and starvation following alleged diversion of foods and drugs donated to them by NGOs and good spirited individuals. They alleged that they currently feed once a day usually half plate each unlike in the past when they ate full plates twice a day.
They called on the Anambra state government, philanthropists and churches, to come to their aide as the exposure makes them vulnerable to all kinds of diseases, especially malaria, fever, anxiety and depression. They also lamented that they sleep with their children on the floor due to lack of mattresses, mosquito nets and others.
“Cartons of noodles brought by individuals have not been given to us since we arrived this IDP Camp. It takes them time to give us food. For instance, our morning food comes in the afternoon without minding that we have little children and some of us are nursing mothers,” one of the flood victims told Orient Daily.
Another victim, Mrs. Obunuja Ojadi, who claimed to be nine months pregnant, said she had been suffering cough, malaria and acute pain alongside her other children since they came to the camp.
Also speaking, Comrade Ifeanyi Agbo, said they do not have access to drugs for pains, malaria and fever, lamenting that that he had to a nine-month pregnant woman to Onitsha General Hospital for treatment.
Reacting to the development, the Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra West Local Government Area, Hon Sylvester Okafor, debunked the rumour of food shortage and food diversion. https://orientdailynews.com.ng/geopolis/anambra/flood-crisis-hunger-diseases-wreak/lalasticlala seun mynd44 |
