The average weekly wage for a footballer in the English Premier League was approximately £50,000 based on a 2017 study.

However, that pales in comparison to what these 5 mega-stars earn. A few key factors have changed the financial landscape of football in recent years. Certain clubs have been sold to extremely wealthy new owners, allowing them to invest heavily in transfer fees and wages.

Chinese clubs have been able to lure some of the finest footballers with massive funds being pumped into their league and the English Premier League (EPL) clubs have generated massive revenues as a result of their lucrative broadcasting deals.

Here we take a look at the 5 footballers who have experienced the greatest financial gain.

#10 | Angel Di Maria (PSG) - $22.6
Salary & Bonus: $20.6 million
Endorsements: $2 million
Angel Di Maria left Manchester United in 2015 to sign a 4-year contract with the Paris giants. He has since proven himself as an important member of the team. The Olympic gold medalist currently earns $20.6m with the Paris Saint-German, having won ten trophies since his debut against Monaco in August 2015.

Endorsement: $6 Million
Aguero has been phenomenal to Manchester City’s rise to elite football in Europe. He has consistently delivered for the Cityzen’s since his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

The Argentine forward has already eclipsed the 200 goal mark for the English Champions. Aguero signed an improved $17m yearly contract in January 2017.

#8 | Luis Suarez (Barcelona) - $26.9m

Endorsement: $7 Million
Luis Suarez has been a pivotal member of the Barcelona’s team since his $96m move from Liverpool in 2014. The Uruguayan striker signed a contract extension worth $20m in December 2016, to extend his stay at Camp Nou till 2021.

Suarez’s major partnership comes from Puma, a deal that gives him £1m every year.

#7 | Wayne Rooney (DC United) - $27m

Endorsement: $5 Million
Wayne Rooney returned to his boyhood club, Everton after an incredible 13-year career at Manchester United. The English football star had signed a $193,000 weekly deal by accepting a fifty per cent pay cut in a bid to move to Merseyside Blue in 2017.

The 32-year-old striker in 2018, signed a three and half year deal with the MLS side, DC United in an undisclosed fee. Most of Rooney’s endorsement earnings comes from Nike, Samsung, EA Sports and HarperCollins.

#6 | Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior (Shanghai SIPG) - $27.4m

Endorsement: $1.5 Million
At the prime of his career, Oscar left Chelsea in a £60m deal to sign for Chinese side, Shanghai SIPG in 2016. The Brazilian forward pockets $515,000 weekly making him the highest earning player in the Chinese Super League. Oscar’s move to the little rising league in China has alienated him in Brazil’s national team.

#5 | Paul Pogba (Manchester United) - $29.5

Endorsement: $4.5 Million
Popularly known for the stylish hairstyles, Pogba returned to Old Trafford as Manchester United’s record signing in 2016, having left Juventus to United in a $120m deal. He has since helped the Red Devils to the FA Cup and the Europa League title in 2017.

The French Midfielder currently earns $20m per every year, with annual bonuses increasing his take-home pay to $25m. Pogba’s major sponsorship deal is from Adidas as he is currently tied in a 10-year contract worth over $40m with the sportswear manufacturing company.
