During the campaigns for the 2015 election season, the then presidential candidate of APC, General Muhammadu Buhari made public declaration of assets a major campaign issue. He promised Nigerians that if elected, he would immediately make his assets declaration documents public. He didn't stop there, he also promised to make all his political appointees declare their assets publicly.

His fans were ecstatic, pointing to that as an evidence of Buhari's readiness to fight corruption, unlike former president Jonathan who said he didn't give a damn about public assets declaration.

After Buhari was sworn in as president, Nigerians waited, to no avail, for the president to make assets declaration public. At first, the presidency tried to deny that Buhari ever made the promise. That didn't work. As criticism increased, and as their first 100 days in office approached, the government released a statement purportedly declaring Buhari and Osinbajo's assets publicly. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/breaking-buhari-osinbajo-declare-assets/

The statement listed a few houses, an orchard, some herd of cows, a few millions of naira and a plot of land at an unknown location in Rivers State as Buhari's assets. Again, Buhari's fans were in a frenzy mood. They said Buhari had done what no other person could do.

But those who knew understood that the government was just playing to the gallery. They were looking for a way to deflect the criticisms which followed Buhari's failure to declare his assets publicly as promised. None of the properties mentioned in the so-called assets declaration had a monetary value attached as is done in proper assets declaration documents. So nobody could say how much Buhari was worth.

The presidency claimed that the asset declaration documents were not made public because the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) was still verifying the documents and therefore could not be made public.

They promised that as soon as the verification was concluded, the documents would be made public. “As soon as the CCB is through with the process, the documents will be released to the Nigerian public and people can see for themselves,” Mr Shehu said.

And that was over 3 years ago.

So for more than 3 years now, the CCB has been verifying Buhari's assets declaration document and has not finished. So I'm wondering, is it the 3 houses or the cows or the orchard that is difficult to count how many they are?? Or maybe they're trying to locate the plot of land that Buhari said he could not remember the location? Or maybe... I don't know.

But you see, Nigerians have forgotten about it entirely. And another election season is here!!!
