The new Ekiti state governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Wednesday ordered the immediate scrapping of payment of development levies in all public secondary and primary schools.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that each secondary student pays N1,000 and primary pupil N500 as development levy per term under the administration of former Gov. Ayo Fayose.

The policy, introduced by Fayose in 2015, was opposed by many people and culminating in a legal challenge by the Catholic Mission.

But Fayemi on Wednesday, at a “Thank You” visit to Ido Ekiti, Headquarters of Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state, his home local council, said his government cannot afford to continue with anti-people policies of the past administration.

According to him, education will henceforth be free in all public primary and secondary schools across the state.

“Education is now free up to the secondary cadre in Ekiti State. Our children would no longer pay tax in both public and private schools
