Days ago, the latest models; the Actros and the Aros were heralded into the Nigerian Market in a one-of-a-kind product launch for an automotive product in Nigeria.

In an atmosphere filled with conviviality, the staff and management of WestStar Associates together with some foreign staff of Daimler Mercedes Benz welcomed guests and the gentlemen of the press to their expansive compound along the Lekki – Epe Expressway for the product launch.

After over 20 years of the proven Actros – it is time to enter a new dimension of heavy-duty trucks in your market. We are very proud to present our newly developed product range to you: The all- new Actros, a synonym for efficiency and reliability and the all-new Arocs symbolizing reliability and robustness, worldwide but especially in Africa.

The trucks were ushered in by a resplendently dressed traditional dance troupe worthy to perform for the King of Trucks, aka, the Asiwaju of Trucks, the Actros and the Arocs.

The Actros is tailored for long trip haulage while the Arocs is tailored for the construction industry.

The new Actros, presents as either a medium or heavy-duty truck with weight variants from 18 to 33 ton. The truck can come as a semi-trailer tractor for long distance haulage and for heavy duty transport. Equipped with a 6-cylinder OM 460 diesel engine that comes in two rated power output of 265 KW (360 hp) or 310 KW (421 hp), there are also optionally available power outputs of up to 425 KW (578 hp). The new Actros also comes with a 3900 mm or 3600 mm wheel base and a torque rating from 1800 nm to 2800 nm depending on the variant. The new Actros is available in 6×4 or 4×2 configurations.

The new Actros comes with an impressive newly developed design. Beyond the exterior design, the appeal extends to the spacious and ergonomic cab interior, providing a clearly arranged driver’s workplace which makes the vehicle operations easy and safe. With the M-cab variant, the new Actros comes in a ClassicSpace cab 2000 mm long and 2300 mm wide offering enough room to work and rest. For even more comfort, the M-cab is equipped with a folding bunk to allow the driver to rest. The driver also benefits from a wide cockpit and a newly designed workplace, this impresses with its perfect ergonomics, the good accessibility of all the controls and many details which ensure that work is simply easier. Other features inside the cab include the multifunction steering wheel with control buttons for the onboard computer, telephone, volume control and the drive systems. It also houses the instrument panel, the Bluetooth radio navigation system and the electronic ignition lock.

The new Arocs comes as a heavy-duty truck with weight variants from 18 to 41 ton. The truck takes on the challenge of heavy duty construction with different applications. The Arocs can come as a platform truck, dumper or concrete mixer, it is possible to install other body applications including firefighting, mining, rescue, tank bodies, vacuum etc. It is also equipped with a 6-cylinder OM 460 diesel engine that comes with a rated power output of 310 KW (421 hp), there is a 3900 mm and a 4500 mm wheel base variant and the torque comes with a rated output of 2100 nm.

The Arocs cabs are convincing with their high level of functionality, their robustness and their striking, powerful design which reflects the dedication of the Arocs to meet every challenge in off-road transportation. With the S-cab variant, the new Arocs comes in a ClassicSpace cab 1700 mm long and 2300 mm wide, it is suited to all applications which require maximum body length – for example in the construction industry or in short-radius distribution. The S-cab also offers great all-round visibility which provides protection against collisions if space for maneuvering is especially tight. Like in the Actros, the new Arocs also has additional features which include the multifunction steering wheel with control buttons for the onboard computer, telephone, volume control and the drive systems. It also houses the instrument panel, the Bluetooth radio navigation system and the electronic ignition lock.

The Mercedes Powershift 3 automated transmission is another stand out feature in the new Actros & Arocs. The automated transmission with Mercedes Powershift 3 comes in 6 to 16 speed transmission variants, with specifically customized transmission modes for power and economy. Drivers also have the option of other transmission modes that include; Fleet, Offroad and more. Additional features in the new Actros & Arocs include the safety and assistance systems like Electric Braking System (EBS) which is incorporated with ABS and ASR. The EBS records the operation of the brake pedal, is informed about current brake pressure and adjust brake pressure if necessary. Other optionally available safety systems include Active Brake Assist 4, the Stability Control Assist system, Lane Keeping Assist and Attention Assist to minimize accident risk, this ensures the driver feels safe from the start of the journey to the final destination.

I jumped aboard the trucks and realized that all said about their ergonomics were all true. The drivers seats have air cushions supporting them and can be adjusted in many different ways making every trip an enjoyable one.

The steering wheel is also adjustable in different ways and is operated via a foot-operated button.

It is also worthy of note to reveal that the trucks have 3-speed reverse gears to help ensure effective use of the engine power, speed and deliver good fuel consumption. The automatic transmission can also be driven in a manual mode, just like you find the steptronic in some saloon cars.

After feeling the driver’s seats, i was taken on a ride and got to experience the trucks in action, confirming that all said were not just fluff but substantiated.
