Residents of Ogidi, Ide­mili North Local Gov­ernment Area head­quarters of Anambra state are now living in fear fol­lowing the invasion of the area by suspected cultists who carry out their activities brazenly.
Orient Daily learnt that shop owners were robbed at gun point over the weekend resulting in closure of shops in the area. Ar­eas mostly affected include the Old Onitsha/Ogidi/Enugu road, around St Philip’s Anglican Church.

According to a victim, who pleaded anonymity, “we now close our shops once it is 7.00pm because of suspected cultists who now prey on us. They rob us daily. Few days ago, the en­tire shops along this road within this St Philip church axis were robbed by the cultists.
“They were up to 150, they emerged from nowhere, divided themselves into two groups, one went towards the Ugwunwasike side while the other went to­wards the Ekenweje side. They robbed as they move and beat up whoever they saw, collected his possessions and before you know what was happening, they have left the place for other places.

“Cries and wailing trailed them as the victims would not have the gut to get close to them. We heard reports of how they also robbed people along the Ugwunwasike/Abatete road, in Ogidi the same day.

“One of the people robbed, a girl, had lodged the complaint at Ogidi police station. Her GSM handset and money were col­lected at gunpoint, as she tried to resist the three-man cultists that were riding on a bike who robbed her, she was hit with their gun butt which made her hands to swell,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Haruna Mohamed, said that five of the cultists have been arrested and transferred to the Special Anti Cultism Squad (SPACS), of the state Police Command.
