The United States Judiciary and the New York Police Department have indicted eight Nigerians and 12 others, in the multi-million dollar scam which allegedly involved 27 banks and 60 individuals, including 20 members of the military stationed at Fort Hood, some in Iraq and others in Afghanistan.

In a joint press statement made available to journalists at the weekend, Richmond County District Attorney, Daniel M. Donovan, and New York Police Department Commissioner, Raymond W. Kelly, announced the indictment. They said it is part of a multi-million dollar identity theft scam that took place in various parts of the States.

Among the defendants, 15 were arrested and arraigned Tuesday and Wednesday in State Supreme Court as part of a 66-count indictment.

Apart from Kazeem Badru,Ganiu Rilwan,Okoronkwo Okechukwu,Chukunenye Okpo and Ishmael Lawandi, Police investigations have also indicted additional 15 individuals on lesser charges.

Among these are Kanayo Unokiwe,Kolawole Adeolike,Ayodele Rosiji and Kelechi Ekwegh of 272 Maple Parkway Staten Island, New York.

District Attorney Donovan said that the arrests were the culmination of an investigation which began in March 2008, following reports of fraudulent checks being laundered through Staten Island banks. He stressed that investigation, through wiretaps and search warrants uncovered a nationwide confederacy of scam artists who engaged in widespread identity theft which yielded, at least, a million dollars a year, and over $2 million during the course of the investigation.

He added that while identity theft is enough of a violation of a citizen's privacy, the suspects also targeted members of the military at Fort Hood in Texas, some bound for Iraq and Afghanistan, at the time of last November's tragic shootings and its immediate aftermath.

In his own submission, New York State Police Commissioner ,Kelly said that the case started with a woman from Montana, who called at One Police Plaza to report that someone on Staten Island was stealing money from her checking account.

He added that the call was transferred to the Special Frauds Squad leading to the arrest of the Nigerians and their collaborators who stole the millions from unsuspecting victims from Staten Island to Fort Hood, Texas, making them victims of soldiers serving their country.

" With insiders stealing valuable data, the ring stole identities to establish checking accounts, credit and debit cards and lines of home equity credit. The detectives and prosecutors can take great pride in putting these despicable con-artists out of business," he added.

According to District Attorney, Donovan, banks on Staten Island reported significant losses with the deposit of fraudulent cheques from Home Equity Line of Credit accounts.

This led to an investigation into the activities of two leaders of the network, Kazeem Badru and Ganiu Rilwan
