Kaduna Crises: Between The Truth And Fiction-

By DOGARA Unyem Caesar, [28/10/2018]

Kaduna state, Considered as the socio-political experimental ground of northern Nigeria has had history of disputes and struggle for economic and political equivalence. However, research and investigations shows that several violent clashes have left thousands dead or displaced, not forgetting the destruction of properties. This can only be due to ineffective management of issues on ground. This loop of carnage and savagery which we can refer to as long term repeated and grievous act of violence in a manner mostly carried out as revenge or reprisal attacks.

When there are issues on ground, especially when it has to do with a good number of dissatisfied population who feel sidelined (economically and politically), it is right to address such issues in the most rational way possible. The government must have to be most neutral enough to reassure both sides of the divide. The breakdown of law and order in kaduna had always been attributed to ethno-religious disputes and the recent cases of farmer-herdsmen clashes amongst others.

Considering the fact that the present administration could be encouraging harm by giving a blind eye to terrorism and also encouraging them, government had failed to committedly tackle farmer-herdsmen clashes, attacks on minority groups as they’ve zealously and repeatedly dealt with the Shia’ minority, opposition and outspoken journalists or the so called ‘hate speech offenders’; It is another provocation of terror by refusing to refer to a certain sect’ as “Terrorists”… therefore, negotiating with herdsmen who are said to be carrying out the revenge attacks and are paid and compensated to stop the killings”.(https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/el-rufai-10-things-governor-said-about-southern-kaduna-killings-video-id6196810.html)

Several outbreak of crises in kaduna and other terrorized states had always been followed by investigations and panels of inquiry. However, with billions of naira put into it, the general public still lacks authentic knowledge because genuine information is hardly made to public and in some cases, recommendations with regards to such inquiries are usually not implemented. Consequently, to end this loop of crises, government should objectively gather up the genuine findings by the authorities concerned and also from the people and settlers on ground. Government must be factual and clerical about it as any form of a sided approach to resolving these issues could unbalance the collective commitment towards peace resolutions by both sides, hence it gives more reasons for the people to believe that injustice is rained on them.

In the words of former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat, “peace is much more precious than a piece of land, so let there be no more wars. There can be hope only for a society which acts as one big family, not as many separate ones… he who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change the reality, and will never therefore make any progress.”

The people need to know that the government they voted into power is tirelessly driving towards peaceful coexistence without any form of bias. This way, harmony will only be a done deal. On the other hand, a clerical orientation is essential to the knowledge of the citizens, most importantly for the youths in affected communities. Hence, with high rate of joblessness shared with electioneering in view of 2019, a more meaningful approach to insecurity is important to minimize the outburst of crises either politically triggered or otherwise.

Personally, I would categorically say that the biggest factor of the growing crises in kaduna lies with ‘leadership’, we shall continue to be a failed state when the truth is far from being told and the ideal and standard for justice is compromised. We shall know no peace until leaders become more responsible and adhere to the task of public safety rather than promoting bad behavior in our societies by enforcing bandits and importing terrorists to actualize and protect their aspirations of political and economic preeminence.
