Lagos Brt Fares To Increase From N100 To 120 And N50 To N70. August 1 by meg2: 11:06am On Jul 19, 2010
Now Governor Fashola wants to take the path of the everyday Nigerian politician, i wonder what is the cause for this increase. So far we'v not heard of any fluctuations in the Oil & gas sector, no increase in Diesel price,Fuel price,Engine oil price etc. When do we start talking about price Reduction instead of Increase??
Pls someone should talk to Fashola and get him to understand what consequences this increase would bring to the lives of the common lagosians who struggle daily to make a living and living below N1000 daily. Government should find other areas to generate revenue which wouldnt bring more misery to the lives of the people instead of going by this usual trend.

Presently on BRT, 50k takes you from Mile 12 to Fadeyi and another 50k from Fadeyi to CMS and #100 takes you from Mile 12 to CMS vice versa. I really do not see anything wrong in it if this fare is incresed marginally by #20. In other buses, one would pay up to #70 from Mile 12 to Maryland, about #150 from Mile 12 to Fadeyi/Yaba. In comparison, even with the new proposed rates, BRT is still far cheaper and more comfortable to other buses.

What is the rationale behind the (proposed) increase?

A very bad move, They should rather bring in more buses and routes so more people can use the brt hence more revenue, As the OP stated cost has gone up, why increase without valid explanation. Thats why nigerian party politics in vibrant opposition, with elections less than 9months away, it would be scoring an own goal to increase fares or amenities used by the most likely to vote

More buses do not necessarily mean more revenue.
This is where the Law of Diminishing returns comes in.
I'm sure there must have been some subsidy one way or the other and this is being gradually removed.

I do not see anything wrong in increase in fares by N20, there is something called inflation.

The question is not whether there is need for increase or not, the question is, have we been told why there should be an increase?

Price increases should not just come like that. The people who pay the fares must know why they have to pay extra.

They already had plans to increase the fare since last year or since inception even, dont know why people are surprised

They have to maintain the bus shelters and extend the lane to other parts of lagos with traffic problems

Have they started plying other routes of theyve left it the way it is?
What about the Ferry Service any new terminals?

I am all for a State run transport system. I know some folks will be stressed by the increase but I think it is worth it if it goes to helping improve and maintain the system. I remember the old LSTC  -- God bless the days of Old!! All of Lagos enjoyed it and I do hope we can get back what we lost and some more.

their should be an increase in the brt price. the infrastructure of the brt is Okay but it needs improvement to be considered modern. and  price increases should get them there. dont be surprised if lagos Brt become like Bogotá's in the next couple of years.

I know it's hard for you to string together and connect but try start with cost of operation and maintenance, expansion of services to other needy areas.
