This guy was just the fucking most.

Ol’ Sapar had a habit of branding his eccentricities everywhere from household names to government property. A few examples include:

-Giving himself the title of “Turkmenbashi” - the Head of Turkmenistan.

-Renaming all 12 months of the year after the supposed heroes of his great nation, which - surprise, surprise - included him, titling January Turkmenbashi.

-Changing the word for bread and April to “Gurbansoltan” - the name of his mother.

-Renaming the town of Krasnovodsk to Turkmenbashi.

-Renaming several schools, airports and a meteorite after him and his family members.

-Erecting a golden statue of himself in the capital of Turkmenistan (Ashgabat) that always rotated to face the sun.

-Banning dogs from the same capital.

-Requesting the building of an ice rink near Ashgabat, in a desert.

-Controlling an official Turkmen media outlet to project a cult of personality.

-Outlawing makeup on television anchors and long hair/beards.

-Outlawing opera, ballet, and circuses.

-Outlawing the chewing/smoking of tobacco in public places, suggesting people could chew on bones instead. This, coincidentally, came just a little while after he was forced to quit smoking. Bitter much?

Though illiterate, he “wrote” a book, “Book of the Soul.” Religious institutions and schools had to give it equal respect as their original subject matter, teaching it to students and believers alike, or be destroyed. It was required reading for anyone wanting a driver’s license, and a copy of it would eventually be launched into space in the mid 2000s.

Thankfully, after 21 years of the lunatics running the asylum, Ol’ Sapar would eventually suffer a heart attack in 2006.
