Everywhere in the country, you’d find music talents. It is impossible to pay attention to all of them, not even if you are a talent scout. If you are just looking for new music or an appealing new artiste, the mainstream is usually the first stop shop; but behind the glare, you’d often find brilliant artists who make fine music. These artistes are typically young and budding talents learning to hone their creative skill as they strive to find their rhythm in the system.

Coming in contact with such artistes at their formative stage could spark off a truly beautiful experience of fandom that would remain as lores to future fans. For instance, following Wizkid from the days of “Fast Money Fast Cars” to this point of global fame – his new fans can only read about the early days and imagine what it was like. Or like being an M.I fan from the time of “Talk About It” and comparing it to the experience of those who learnt about his music in more recent times – both experiences shouldn’t even be compared.

There’s a stronger bond between artistes and their day-one fans – the ones who have followed them from their most basic level to their zenith. Such fans are part of the tale of success. That’s why it feels like a privilege to discover a talent early and watch them become stars. Here’s a list of rising talents whose music is worth following at the nascent stage:

Waye

The young and talented Miss Waye is an Afro-fusion artiste who is currently enjoying the fruits of her efforts in the field of self-discovery. She started music in her teens, following a path that appeared to freely expressive and adventitious but after a long hiatus she returned looking more interested in plying a path with design and purpose. She comes with a defined style of music and her artistic maturity is evident on her comeback release titled “Your Love”, which has placed her before the eyes of the seers of the industry.

Mimido

Folklore music has a characteristic deep and soulful feel. These elements give essence to the music of Mimido – a Project Fame alumnae who has chosen the outlying way of the likes of Asa and Brymo. His John Legend-like vocal has its own special effect and the grace in his compositions helps them warm the heart. His primitive song, “Prodigal Song”, is a beautiful product of tale-telling, whose theme is similar to that of the biblical story. “Aaye” shows his readiness for more advanced composition assignments like moving soundtracks for movies or documentaries.

Bode Blaq

Since Falz showed how rap music can be “democratised” without losing its essence, another act who is just as convincing with his unique style of rap is Bode Blaq. The dark and fashionable artiste makes coltish rap music with his signature baritone voice that likens him to Black Magic. His anthem titled “Balu” is a parlance for an ignorant loser. It is just the kind of word that grows to become popular on the street, just like Olamide’s “Science Student.” Bode’s music is complimented by his bubbly character that sees him post tease and engage his followers with teasing IG videos.

Juju Boy Star

This Nigerian pop talent reminds me of the young Wizkid with the endless and effortless melodies he rolls out. His IG page (@jujuboystar), is littered with videos of himself and his fans vibing to his lovely tunes. His “Gimme Love” single is a song you can’t help but love if you’re a fan of Afro-pop music. The industry figures have started to cast their gaze on him, with the likes of MI Abaga, Reekado Banks watching him closely on IG. He recently shared picture of his meeting with Rudeboy and the word spreading around is that he is one of the “next in line”.

Teeban

Talents like 9ice are one-in-a-generation talent – the kind of talent that infuses the right amount of cultural elements into their music and blends it with trendy sounds that ensures the pop audience would love it. Teeban is such rare talent. His single, “Loke Loke” is a Yoruba traditional music classic like 9ice’s “Gongo Aso”. Stumbling upon this song on the radio, led to the search for his other materials and this search led to an amazing revelation of his interesting singles and impressive features. The only reason you’re not a fan yet, is because you haven’t listened to his music yet.
