Scientists from the Human Media Lab at Korolev University have created a prototype touch device that is neither a smartphone nor a tablet, but has features of both. The MagicScroll device (“magic scroll”) was created under the impression of ancient scrolls (from papyrus, paper or parchment) and has a rolled up cylindrical form factor - with a flexible 7.5-inch touchscreen placed in the case.

A new form factor, which was made using 3D printing, means that the device can be used as the old Rolodex (remember this?) To quickly switch contacts on the screen by rotating the physical wheel built into the edge of the device. (One such at each end).

Then, when more information or a deeper dive is required, the user can expand the screen and expand the displayed display. The flexible screen of the prototype has a resolution of 2K. So at this stage it will be a mid-level mobile phone, not an iPhone with a Retina, of course.
Telephone scroll: in memory of the ancient Egyptians?

Scientists also believe that the scroll form factor offers a pleasant ergonomic option for making real phone calls, because a rolled-up scroll can fit snugly to your face.

Although they recognize that the prototype is quite large at this stage, it is pleasant to hold it in my hand, recalling the massive mobile phones of the 1980s. Sort of a classic 1984 Motorola 8000X Dynatac.

Despite the awkwardness of the prototype, the team claims that the cylindrical flexible form factor has its advantages: it is easier to hold it with one hand than any iPad. And if you roll it up, it will take off in your pocket (albeit in a large one).

They also believe that this device is possible for dictation or instructions, not only as a voice telephone. A camera is built into the prototype, allowing you to control the device with gestures similar to the Nintendo Wiimote gestural system.

Also, robotized drives were added to the rotational wheels so that the screen could rotate independently, if needed.

“We were inspired by the design of the ancient scrolls, because their shape provides a more natural, continuous presentation of long visual graphs,” says Roel Vertegaal, a professor of human-computer interaction and the laboratory director.

“Another source of inspiration was the old Rolodex systems, which were used to store and view contact cards. Scrolling MagicScroll allows you to rotate the scroll indefinitely and view long lists. Expand the scroll - and get a complete picture of the selected object. You can waste your time on Instagram, messages or contacts on LinkedIn this way. ”

“In the end, we hope to develop a device that can curl up into something small, like a pen, which can be put in a breast pocket,” he adds. “More broadly, the MagicScroll project also allows us to further explore the notion that“ screens may not be flat, ”or“ anything can be a screen. ” Whether it's a cup with an interactive screen or a display on clothes, we study how objects can become applications. ” Read More

Down here, we specialise in mining skulls instead of making use of what the skull is housing for technological development.
