City have faced a series of allegations this week over their attempts to circumvent FFP rules and join Europe's elite clubs over a decade of Abu Dhabi rule.

Mourinho was careful not to be drawn on 'what is behind' City's emergence, but acknowledged the work done across town to establish Pep Guardiola's side as one of the best on the continent.

'It's difficult for me to answer because I focus on my job,' said Mourinho. 'I focus on the four lines, on football. If you want to speak about their football potential, we can speak and football potential starts with investment.

'After that, of course there is a quality of the work, of the organisation. I think that is untouchable, but what is behind I cannot say but in this moment I have only to think about football, and to think about football is to think about Manchester City as a football team there.'
