Sunday was a day to forget for Gonzalo Higuain, but Cristiano Ronaldo insists that he hopes the AC Milan striker isn't punished too harshly after his furious reaction to a red card against Juventus.

The Argentinian forward, who missed a penalty earlier in the clash, argued with the referee's decision to award him a yellow card.

Match official Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni then responded to Higuain's actions by showing him a red card.

At this point the striker, who is on loan from Juventus, lost all control and erupted into a fit of rage.

Despite bearing the brunt of Higuain's fury, Ronaldo was keen to stick up for his opponent in a post-match interview, revealing what he said to the striker on the pitch.
"I told him to calm down, as he risked an even heavier ban," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner told Sky Sport Italia...."
