In less than 72 hours, the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) will fully declare campaigns open for all the political parties participating in the 2019 elections. What this means is that political parties will be able to campaign freely, and using every method within their reach provided it is in line with the guidelines of INEC.

Buhari, the incumbent president, who is also contesting for another term in office, is also entitled to the campaign, using any method that pleases him as long as it does not violate the rules of the campaign.

As part of the All Progressives Congress’ campaign preparation, it has launched a Buhari Unity Band – a collection of Buhari’s wristbands, symbolically meant to express his commitment to the unity of Nigeria. Given the development of Buhari and APC, Nigerians should not be carried away by the President’s election rhetoric commitment to unity.

There is nothing wrong with using wristbands as a campaign strategy, however, there is everything wrong with the purported intention behind the wristbands. Why? Because it is a political strategy to sweep votes amongst unsuspecting Nigerians, who are not aware of the president’s true stand on the unity of Nigeria, which obviously is hypocritical.
