FULL STORY:

A mentally ill man was beaten to death by six self-proclaimed exorcists during a ritual meant to rid him of 'evil spirits' in Azerbaijan.

Murad Soltanov, 25, [/b]had been taken to see the men by his father, who believed that his son's schizophrenia had been caused by demons.[b]

The 'exorcism' allegedly saw the men [/b]beat Ms Soltanov with pomegranate tree branches for several hours, breaking his bones and rib cage in the process. [b]
Mr Soltanov had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in his hometown of Mashtaga near the Azerbaijani capital city Baku.

He had undergone treatment, including medication, but his father did not think it sufficed, and so decided to turn to exorcists.
The father took his son to the town of Shabran, some 85 miles north of their home down, but did not tell anyone else about the purpose of their visit.

According to local media, the men told police they had started beating the 25-year-old to 'subdue his inner demons' when he began shouting and crying.
[/b]When Soltanov began coughing up blood, the men said this was considered a good sign as it meant that the demons were leaving his body.[b]

Police arrested the six men after Mr Soltanov's badly bruised body was found in a flat in Shabran last week.

Fizuli Garibov, Vusal Ibragimov, Aprel Halilov, Sahib Halilov, Afgan Tarverdiev and Jamil Gayibov have been taken into custody awaiting a charge.

During the interrogation, they reportedly admitted to beating Soltanov with pomegranate branches which then caused his death.

Police reportedly learned that Soltanov had also been 'treated' this way at the home of his father.

The investigation continues.
