2011 polls Nigeria - Indications emerged Monday that Nigeria may carry out a fresh voter registration as a prelude to next year's general elections, expected to hold in January.

The private Nation newspaper quoted unnamed presidency sources as saying Preside nt Goodluck Jonathan has authorised the release of 72 billion naira (about US$500 million) to the Independent Nation al Electoral Commission (INEC) for the fresh voters' register.

The report could not be independently confirmed.

INEC chairman Attahiru Jega said last week that the commission would require the amount urgently if it is to compile a fresh register within the stipulated time.

Following the announcement, the opposition and civil society organisations mount ed pressure on the government to provide the needed funds, saying next year's elections would fail if it is based on the 2006 register, which is widely defective.

The existing register contained multiple registration, under-aged voters as well as many foreign names, and was blamed for the failure of the 2007 polls.

By the provision of the 2006 Electoral Act (as amended), INEC has between now an d 9 November to produce a credible register for the 2011 polls.

Calling for the release of the required funds on Sunday, the opposition Action C ongress (AC) party said 'for a country that has US$37 billion in Foreign Reserves and US$3 billion in its Excess Crude Account, 72 billion naira - which is less than US$500 million - is but a very little price to pay for a successful polls and the consolidation of democracy'

What you both have said is true, but I believe that any sacrifice for credible elections is a very worthy sacrifice. Lets support Jega now and only hang him if he fails.
