What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?
Sickle Cell Disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. SCD is a genetic condition that is present at birth. It is inherited when a child receives two sickle cell genes - one from each parent.

SCD is diagnosed with a simple blood test at the lab during routine newborn screening tests at the hospital. Also, it can be diagnosed before birth. This is because children with SCD are at an increased risk of infection and other health problems. 

This is why early diagnosis is very important. 

Signs and Symptoms
- Swelling of the hands and feet

- Symptoms of anaemia - fatigue or extreme tiredness

- Jaundice

- Infections 

- Delayed growth 

What is the "Cure and Treatment" Option
SCD is a disease that worsens over time. There are available treatments that can prevent complications and lengthen the lives of those with this condition. The treatment is different per person depending on the symptoms and severity.

There are two drugs that have shown some promising result - L-Glutamine Oral Powder (Endari) and Hydroxyurea. The former help prevent these crises from occurring and thus prevent hospitalisation while the latter prevents abnormal red blood cells from forming.

However, you must consult with your doctor for a better plan to handle the crisis.

For SCD cure, there is the option of bone marrow or stem cell transplant.
