EFCC Signs Mou With Interpol Ahead Of 2019 Election by ahmedkoded95(m): 12:26pm On Nov 30, 2018
- The EFCC on Thursday, November 29, signed an MoU with the International police in preparation for the 2019 polls

- The acting chairman of the agency, Ibrahim Magu, said that the agreement will help checkmate fraud in Nigeria

- Magu urged staff members of the anti graft agency to see the Interpol as a model in the fight against corruption

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, November 29, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the International Police (INTERPOL) as part of collaboration targeted at eradicating corruption in Nigeria.

As an international police communications system that connects law enforcement operatives in all member nations, the MoU, I-24/7 enables users share sensitive and urgent information with their counterparts globally at all times, PR Nigeria reports.

During the reception of the delegations led by the INTERPOL commissioner, Shola Subair, at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, the acting chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, expressed his appreciation for the initiative.

Magu added that the move will help in checkmating fraudulent activities throughout the world generally and in Nigeria particularly.

The EFCC's boss also said the MoU will create a greater technical team work and allow the agency to be connected to the 194 member countries of the organisation. He stressed the need for EFCC staff to take the interpol as their model.

He used the opportunity to explain how the database can be used in tracing the movement of looters in an out of the country and also how this collaboration will give EFCC access to the 194 member countries of the Interpol.

Magu said: “All sort of criminality is taking place and looters are everywhere, now that the EFCC is going for extradition of looters outside the country, there is no better time than now, EFCC will use it opportunity judiciously”

"The EFCC is on the watch out. We would not fold our hands and allow people move illicit funds indiscriminately in the name of vote buying. Nigeria is blessed with both human and natural resources. It is high time the generality of Nigerians get rewarded for God given natural resources that are about.”

On his part, Subair emphasised on the importance of the partnership, as it would further strengthen the anti-corruption efforts of the EFCC.

He stated: “INTERPOL provides a wide range of policing expertise and capabilities, supporting three main crime programmes: Counter-terrorism, Cybercrime, Organized and Emerging Crimes.

"We are mobilising for the enlistment of all law enforcement agencies in Nigeria, and we consider to kick start the assignment at the EFCC.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that due to a recent fire outbreak at its office, the EFCC had relocated its data centre and inter-agency task force units to its headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

Regrettably, the inferno, which took place at Wuse 2, Abuja on Monday, November 19, caused huge loss of data and equipment.

Tony Orilade, the acting spokesman of the EFCC, revealed that the value of the damaged items is worth a lot of millions. “The value of the damaged items, mostly ICT consumables, is in a few millions,” he said, adding that detailed analysis of the damage is yet to be made public.
