There are already strategies on the way by the opposition party to woo students who are Lagos state indigenes due to the delay of Scholarship and Bursary funds. This could have a negative effect on the support base of Sanwo-Olu.

The Lagos State Scholarship Board which provides scholarships and bursary for indigenes of Lagos state in tertiary institutions is failing in its duty to provide the fund as at when due.

It was announced in October this year that the State Government had released fund for the 2017/2018 session. Documentation was followed with the payment of N2000 by the new beneficiaries. But there has been no news since the end of documentation.

Already some of the students spoken with are planning to organised a peaceful protest on the 5th of December. This will be very unprecedented as there have never been such delays in payment of Scholarship before. It will be another low for the current Lagos state government after the much talked about dirty Lagos. The Ambode-led government need to rise to the occasion and nib the bud on time otherwise, Sanwo-Olu may suffer the consequences while the opposition party use the medium to woo the students.

REPORT OF MEETING ON THE ISSUES SURROUNDING BURSARY/SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENT DELAY HELD ON 21ST WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 2018 WITH DELEGATIONS OF THE NATIONAL BODY, CHAPTER PRESIDENTS AND FELLOW MEMBERS WITH THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY LSSB.

Fraternal greetings to all amiable, impeccable and world class members of our dearest mega union, I celebrate us all, may the spirit of Aluta our martyr continue to water our struggle and lead us right.

Fellow compatriots it is on the submission of our communication and a prolong discussion, negotiation, plea and plead on the swift release of our bursary/scholarship fund that we had elaborate talk, chat and exchange of words to suit our dearest union.

In attendance was delegates of the national body, local chapter presidents and fellow loving and inspirational members of our union with the Executive Secretary Lagos state scholarship board, and his ever gallant PRO LSSB. The Executive Secretary made us to understand the fact that he has been on the connect to the authority even long before our coming that they should save him from our embarrassment that it will not be palatable if we are forced to go on the street of Lagos in protest and he made us realized that all hands are on desk to see to the payment short while.

Despite series of valid evidence to see that the ES is on the fast track of our payment, we made him understand that we shall not hesitate to disturb the peaceful co-existence been enjoyed by the government if they fail to do the needful.

The ES also made us know that the delay was also premised on the payment of workers salaries which is always on 22 & 23 of every months for Lagos state.

He therefore implore us to be patient with them, as our bursary will be ready by next week. It is on this end that we made him ES understand that we are on the right path and we had come at the appropriate time, that in our communication we are giving a Three-Day Ultimatum to effect the payment which is 22, 23, and 26 respectively which falls on Monday the 26th November, 2018 and failure for the state government to completely comply, we shall exercise our studentship charisma by staging a Solid Peaceful Protest to the State House on Wednesday the 5th December, 2018.

This was our resolution, despite this breakdown, the Board Secretary was still on the plea that it is not until we go on protest that our right will be secured and

we made him understands that its becoming a concurrent issue to this administration. That's its always until we force the government before they comply.

We shall no jeopardize your interest for lies. Please be informed that the delay is not from the Bank at all. The delay is premised on Government Not Funding the Board Account. This is with factual evidence. Don't be deceived, for we at this end will not toy you and never deceive you.

Fellow compatriot NULASSITES we shall always stand by oath of office to securing and protecting the interest of our dearest esteemed members of our mega Union NULASS. For your pain is our pain and your mandate we should.

For as service delivery is the advocate of modern democracy, we shall not hesitate to deliver. For the who fails to speak, dies in shackles.

The meeting ended with a toast of advice from the ES and mentorship guide for an effective and efficient NULASS.

Long live NULASS

Lagos students occupy State House over non-payment of scholarship and bursary

The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) on Wednesday, December 5 staged a peaceful protest to Governor’s Office (Lagos House), Ikeja over the unexplained delay in payment of 2016, 2017 and 2018 bursary and local scholarship to beneficiaries and awardees.
The beneficiaries are students of Lagos-origin in various higher institutions of learning in Nigeria and overseas. Paying bursaries to these set of students has been a long-time tradition of state and it dated back to 1980 when the scheme was initiated by Lateef Jakande administration. Subsequent administrations in the state have kept this scheme and considered it a noble one.

It would be recalled that the students had threatened to embark on social disturbance over the non-payment of their bursary for the 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/18 academic sessions.

According to NULASS, Governor Ambode announced on October 16, 2018, that his administration had released a sum of N683 million for payment of bursary, local and foreign scholarship to students of Lagos-origin across Nigeria and overseas. This fund is expected to cover payments for arrears of bursaries and scholarships.

Fifty-two (52) days after this announcement the students claimed they are yet to receive any payment from the government.

“It is with burning, melting, and embittered hearth that the apex body of the only Indigenous Students of Lagos State origin – National Union of Lagos State Students’ (NULASS), which comprises of the five divisions of the state (Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island and Epe) rise on our feet’s to express our pains and pour our grievances on the lackadaisical and ungodly attitude of the state government towards the indigenous students.

“The government has turned deaf ears to the yearnings and chants on the urgent need to roll-out payment of the bursary and local scholarship awards.”

“It is sardonic, lugubrious and a show of state of dismay that the Lagos state government can be so toiling, deceitful and scamming the populace by using the media to trick over 6.2 million students of Lagos-origin on bursary and local scholarships. The Lagos state government on 16th of October, 2018 falsely announced to the release of the sum of N683 million for payment of bursary, local and foreign scholarships.”

The Lagos State Scholarship Board (LSSB) hinted that its accounts are yet to be credited with the stated fund for onward disbursement to beneficiaries.

The Lagos state government response
The protesting students were addressed by the officials of the government including the State Accountant General, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education Mr Obafela Bank- Olemoh, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Executive Secretary of LSSB among others.

According to Mr Ojoare Balaji, NULASS President LASU Chapter: “The government has assured us that our voices have been heard and promised to pay as soon as possible. There is no time frame for this promised payment.”

Based on this, the body extended the ultimatum till Friday, December 7.

This is rubbish news...rubbish post...

There is nothing like ambode scholarship or Sanwolu scholarship....

The scholarship scheme predates all those in politics now...that scheme was put in place by Latest Jakande ...

And let's us use our heads once in a while...

If Sanwolu (unlike Ambode) can complete on the project of his predecessor....

Is it a scholarship that he probably benefited from when he was at school he is not going to pay.....

All this is the main reason Nigerians deserve thier leaders....

The followers are not so different from their leaders
