Egyptian Actress Rania Youssef who appeared in a lacy, black, see-through dress that exposed most of her legs at the Cairo Film Festival has been charged with “inciting debauchery” and is set to go trial. The 44-year-old has since apologised for wearing the dress and has said that if she had anticipated the outrage it would cause, she would not have worn it. Said Youssef,

She faces a maximum of 5 years in prison if the court finds her guilty of the charge. The charges were brought by two lawyers Amro Abdelsalam and Samir Sabri, who are notorious for taking celebrities to court. Speaking to AFP, Sabri said

[Ms Youssef’s appearance] did not meet societal values, traditions and morals and therefore undermined the reputation of the festival and the reputation of Egyptian women in particular.

Last year singer Shaimaa Ahmed was sentenced to two years in prison although this was later reduced to 1 year after she appeared in a music video in her underwear while suggestively eating a banana.
