The academic staff union of polytechnics (ASUP) Abia State Polytechnic Chapter had embarked on a protest over eleven month’s unpaid salaries.

A source who spoke with Abia Breaking News said the protest started on Monday, December 3rd as a mini protest but assumed a more serious dimension on Tuesday.

He said the protest became unavoidable following the state government's inability to honour a gentleman agreement reached with the union. He maintained that Abia polytechnic ASUP had earlier agreed with the governor Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to pay their three month salary arrears prior to their examination.

He expressed dismay that three weeks after the examinations, this agreement has not been respected by the government of Abia state which rather paid a month salary against the three earlier agreed. "The question is what happened to the other two months he promised, not to talk of the other months?" he queried.

He said the Polytechnic workers set fire in front of the school premises to show their displeasure and restricted access to the school key management staff especially the Registrar, Rector and Bursar till their salaries are paid.

According to him, the Rector has been invited to Umuahia to have a dialogue with the state authorities on how to restore industrial harmony for normal academic activities to resume.

He expressed optimism that the issues may be resolved quickly but vowed that if it lingers till tomorrow (Wednesday) it will assume a dimension that is never imagined. He said this protest will continue till one week.
