A major government building put up a Satanic decoration of an arm holding an apple with a snake coiled around it as part of its Christmas display .
The Illinois State Capitol features a Nativity scene for Christmas, a menorah for Hanukkah – and now a ‘ Snaketivity’ for Satanism.
The sculpture was gifted to the building by the Chicago branch of The Satanic Temple .

It appears to be a reference to the Bible story of Eve being tempted to eat the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden by the devil, who posed as a serpent .
A sign erected close to it explains that the state did not have a choice as to whether or not the sculpture would be allowed in the public building .
It says : “ The State of Illinois is required by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution to allow temporary , public displays in the state capitol so long as these displays are not paid for by taxpayer dollars.
“ Because the first floor of the Capitol Rotunda is a public place, state officials cannot legally censor the content of speech or displays. ”
The Satanic Temple that donated the sculpture describes itself as a ‘ non - theistic organisation ’ in its application to install the display , according to NPR.
They raised $1 , 500 on a GoFundMe page that said , “ Chicago will no longer allow one religious perspective to dominate the discourse in the Illinois State Capitol rotunda during the holiday season. ”
