Acute malnutrition hits Nasarawa, 30 children, 2,000 others hospitalised

Umar Muhammed, Lafia

Thirty children have been confirmed dead, while more than 2,000 are currently receiving attention for acute malnutrition in various medical centres across Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State Primary Health Care Development Agency’s Nutrition Officer, Hajiya Halima Yusuf, confirmed this at a two-day meeting of the state Committee on Food and Nutrition on Sunday in Lafia.

She explained that the children had in the last three months been admitted to 15 health care centres in 13 Local Government Areas and 18 development areas of the state following the increase in the cases of acute malnutrition and other diseases due to inadequate nutrition.

“About 30 children have lost their lives to acute malnutrition and over 2,000 children are currently receiving medical attention in various medical centres across the state,” Yusuf said.
She further explained that as a result of the rising cases of malnutrition, the state Primary Health Care Development Agency had embarked on an intensive community management of acute malnutrition programme across the state in order to address the crisis.

Earlier, the Nasarawa State Coordinator, Committee on Food and Nutrition, Mr Abdul Osama, emphasized the need for more campaigns on the importance of nutritious food.

On his part, the State Chairman, Committee on Food and Nutrition, Mr Emmanuel Alidzi, appealed for urgent action to address the cases of malnutrition in the state.

The Nutrition Focal Persons in the local government areas also called for budgetary provisions for nutrition at the local government level.

Northern City News reports that the meeting of the Committee on Food and Nutrition drew focal persons from all the local government areas of the state.

500,000 Under-Five Malnourished Children In Anambra

Awka – About half a million children under five years old in Anambra State are said to grapple with acute malnutrition and stunted growth, resulting from poor feeding and lack of proper hygiene practice.

The findings were contained in the 2017 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey conducted nationwide.

Speaking with journalists at the state secretariat complex in Awka at the weekend, Ngozi Ekwedike, Anambra State Baby-Friendly Initiative cum Infant and Young Child Feeding coordinator, said the result of the survey presented a precarious situation in the state

She expressed deep concern on the alarming number of malnourished children in the state, adding urgent remedial actions should be taken to address poor feeding culture among nursing mothers.

Ekwedike further disclosed that government had a responsibility to help increase rate in nutrition education through training of more health workers on infant feeding, emphasising that statistics showed poor child feeding practice in Anambra.

According to her, breast-feeding rate across the country was abysmally poor due to the attitude of most nursing mothers who subjected their babies to supplementary feeding during the period they were expected to practise exclusive breastfeeding, stressing that the negligence of most nursing mothers were contributory factors to the high rate of children’s malnutrition, thereby making the infants susceptible to childhood diseases like measles, respiratory track infections, polio, diarrhoea, worm and a host of other conditions.
