Nigeria Needs To Emphasize Vocational And Technical Education!!! by Jman06(m): 10:35am On Dec 11, 2018
Enough of churning out too many university graduates with no clearly defined career path! This is the reason for the worrisome rate of unemployment in the country.

Government should encourage more of our youths to go into vocational and technical education after secondary school. They can do this by creating and funding more of such centers, while also creating industries where such vocational and technical skills can be utilized for national development.

Universities should cut down the number of students they admit into some courses like those in the natural sciences, biological sciences, some in the medical sciences etc. They can do this by raising the cut off points into those courses and ensuring that only students who chose those courses as first choice are admitted.

We are not doing ourselves any good by continually producing hundreds of graduate s of courses like biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, philosophy, mass communication, psychology, etc who would come out of school only to join the pool of unemployed graduates roaming the streets.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't hate these courses! I'm not implying that they are not important. But we should weigh their importance against our needs. Take few people into these courses, train them well for research purposes, provide research grants for our universities and research institutions so that upon graduation, graduates of these courses can easily get placements in our universities to further their post graduate studies on scholarships while those who can't win scholarship can be attached to professors and other senior lecturers on research grants. The FEW who can be absorbed into other white collar jobs can readily get employed.

The rest of our youths can be encouraged to go into skills acquisition via technical and vocational education so that we can produce enough artisans to drive our industrial development.
Enough of this chaotic system that produces too many graduates that are not really needed in the labour market!

Our education policy makers should take urgent steps towards addressing this issue. I wish they'll listen!
