My friend had 2 interviews with an oil company in the down stream sector as a depot representative they requested for his pay slip all interview held by phone call and conference call...why do firms so this

To know your pay the last place you worked.
To know the level of your exposure to loans and advances.
To determine if you have supplied any information in your cv that contradicts what is in your pay slip.
