Minority Have Been Electing Kwara Governors- KLPP

The coalition of Kwara Likeminds Political Parties (KLPP), an umbrella body of about 25 political parties in Kwara state working to produce a consensus governorship candidate for 2019 general elections, says a third force is in course in Kwara State.
The group while welcoming seven new political parties that juust joined the coalition also argued that minority have been electing the state leadership in the past.
The KLPP Convener, and Chairman of Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, Prophet Maxwell Emmanuel Kolawole, stated this at a reception organized by the coalition to welcome members of the new political parties in Ilorin.
Prophet Maxwell Emmanuel noted that the voter’s apathy recorded during elections in the state gives minority to decide the fate of over one electorates registered by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, about 50 percent of registered voters exercised their civic right in 2011 where Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed won with 272,000 votes while other parties garnered about 270,000 voters all together.
He added that only 45 percent of Kwarans/residents exercised their franchise at the 2015 governorship poll in Kwara state.
He however said with the emergence of KLPP and the parties involved, a larger population of Kwara people will be participating in the next election, while their bulk vote will decide who leads the state in the next democratic dispensation.

“We will partner with INEC and other stakeholders to increase political participation by intensifying voter’s education. Elections in Nigeria is becoming highly competitive and it’s better to work together to win and form unity government.

“If you look at the recent gubernatorial polls in Osun and Ekiti states as well as Kwara by-election, the margin between the winner and main loser is very close. APC won Osun election with less than 500 votes after going into coalition with Social Democratic Party.”
Emmanuel noted that KLPP coalition will deepen democratic process, stating that Nigeria’s democracy is growing and Kwara state must embrace it’s coalition to move forward.

Kwara Likeminds Political Parties convener said more political parties have indicated their interest to join the coalition in the interest of Kwara with talks going on.

Responding to having a partnership devoid of rancour, Maxwell Kolawole explained that all KLPP member parties will sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to avoid such conflicts.

Some of the parties that just joined include DI, PNC, ANP, DA, C FOR C.

Chairman of ANP, Mohammed Ibrahim who spoke on behalf of other party chairmen, expressed delight at the new political trend in the state of harmony.
