Prior to the party primaries, it was easy to believe that the 2019 presidential election will be a walk in the park for the APC. This is because majority of the electorates consider the party's candidate a safer pair of hands. The PDP's failure to agree on a consensus candidate and the possible exodus that was expected to follow the outcome of it's primary was another factor. Also, the precarious unity that was hitherto enjoyed within the APC was expected to play a part in delivering victory to it's candidate.

However, judging by the post primary events, it is safe to say that both the PDP and the APC have a sporting chance of success. The motley miscellany of antiparty elements in the APC has swiftly and significantly reduced the party chances. Today, the APC is a party of many leaderships. Because of their arrogance, obsession, greed and proclivity, some governors and lawmakers have openly declared that they will work against the party. Despite all these, the party leadership seems to be in no hurry to either mollify or sanction these members. The frantic efforts made at achieving meaningful reconciliation have so far drawn a blank.

After a thorough assessment of the Nigerian political scene, one can only arrive at the galling conclusion that once again it is choosing between the underperforming APC and the failed PDP. Yes, the third force might make their existence known this time but in making perceptible difference, 2019 comes too soon.

While we relish the cut and thrust of the political campaigns, it is equally important to remind the ruling party of the things they ought to have done and which they could have done but agonizingly failed to do. And also remind them of the things they could have avoided which they religiously did, regrettably to the detriment of the poor Nigerians who put them in the saddle. The PDP on the other hand, though the underdogs, should not be spared in bringing to the fore their 16years of misrule.

While the sycophants, enthusiasts, leeches and the hanger ons lurking around the presidency continue to tell this administration that they have done extremely well, the patriotic but poor masses who want to live in a better Nigeria, who bear the final brunt of any minor or grand corruption, nepotism, insecurity, unemployment and other concomitants of underdevelopment should never shrink from expressing their dissatisfaction with the current state of the country.

Though APC and PDP are seen as two sides of a coin and the fact that APC is only a good party when it is compared with PDP and Buhari administration is adjudged as good only when it is compared with PDP's years of ineffectualness, the reality today is that whether Nigerians can see and enjoy good roads, quality healthcare, strike-free academic calendar, burgeoning economy and uninterrupted power supply or not still depends on the good governance or otherwise of either of these two parties.

So, in the name of everything good, we must find a way to make any party in power more responsible, more accountable, more transparent and more pro masses.
