ASUU has lost my sympathy since. Doctors and professors without any life changing invention. They regularly churn out half baked graduates and money budgeted for researches usually end in their pockets. Nigerian universities need total overhaul. We have to dispense with the current crops of lecturers if we are to make headway as a nation.

Yes oh. ASUU strike is now meaningless. Until university system is restructured in line with best global practice, government should yield to ASUU demand. Earned allowance should be scrapped. Students ahould also rate both academic and non-acafemic staff. Staff promotion and retention should be based staff rating to be done by students. Rating should be done online and governing council of each university should veto the ratings. Furthermore, each university should sign mou with any of the best university in the world. Mou will make it mandatory for a representative of a foreign university to be part of governing council.

This is the best time to get what they are fighting for once and for all.
The buhari government which cares more about deceiving the public than addressing concrete issues will NEVER attend to them after the elections and if they lose, a new government will ask for time to settle down to work and the waiting game continues.

ASUU is striking while the iron is hot.

You don't give your wife adequate money for food, yet complain that the meal she provides for you is below standard.
You can never eat your cake and have it.
If you need quality research and graduates then fund the damn institutions adequately .

Should I not ask question regarding the little stipends given to my wife ?. Did she use it to buy pepper which seems inadequate or she used it to pay gate fee at WizKid show?

how do u reason? you want to produce full baked graduates while funding the universities very poorly? do you know that ghana invest more on education compared to Nigeria? next time think before coming online to spit rubish
@petersamuel8

Carefully pick your fight or else you will be pumelled seriously here. You are sounding like those half baked graduates produced by those lecturers. Can't you argue without being rude?. What had those lecturers done with the little they were given. There's a huge disconnect between the town and the gown . If you don't know, go and ask how it is done in other climes. Come up with a ground breaking invention and see grants flowing in. Ebola hit Nigeria, no professor was seen doing anything about it in the lab. We had to wait on the US for vacines. Even if the invention will fail, do something. Screaming about funding is just a smokescreen for their inadequacies.

Without adequate funds , no research can be done.
Lets stop all these arguments and tell ourselves the truth. The Government is the cause of all this , from your comment i feel you live outside this country

actually, a good number of lecturers in Nigerian universities carry out relevant & extensive research.

but how do you conduct a research when the necessary funding & amenities cannot be accessed?

for instance, look at TETFund's research grant allocations. most times, the hurdles put in place discourage academics from accessing the funds. often times, the funds are not released when needed & you know some researches are time-bound.

look at the general issues of infrastructure & security. recall the lecturers kidnapped by BH around the Lake Chad Basin? some of them were using the opportunity to conduct research.

then you have government's lack of encouragement for certain research. again in the last couple of years, about 2 lecturers have come up with some claims on curing or treating HIV. rather than the government assisting to refine & encourage the research, the lecturers were castigated.

then look at the salary. it is a struggle for lecturers to fully dedicate their time to carrying out long term research because the financial incentives are lacking.

so as much as you have made a valid observation, the reality on ground puts into question, your position on the matter...
