(1)You can be dark-skinned and be mixed.

(2) You can also be light-skinned and not be able to trace back to you "european" roots.

Its because people have bought into the idea that for someone to be light skin they need to have some sort of Caucasian ancestry. There was a study conducted in Brasil about the ancestry of the Brasilian people and they found out that a lot of the people that prided themselves on being white had a lot of African ancestry while a some of people who called themselves black had little African ancestry.
