Chelsea (Premier League champions and FA Cup winners) will face Manchester United (Premier League runners-up) at Wembley Stadium in the 88th annual FA Community Shield, with the date being confirmed as Sunday 8th August 2010

Last season, there was very little separating Chelsea and Manchester United, both in the Premier League standings and when they met on the pitch. Chelsea won both meetings during the season by a one-goal margin, and by virtue of those two wins, edged United to the title by one point.

We should’ve expected no less after their thrilling Community Shield meeting last August, and the story could be much the same on Sunday when the two prime title contenders square off in the Community Shield for the second straight year.

Chelsea’s only notable summer signing thus far is former Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun, who was snapped up last month in a 5.5m pound deal. A deal will soon be completed for Benfica midfielder Ramires, but it won’t be in enough time for the Brazil international to make his debut in the Community Shield.

Manchester United have a couple of talented new faces, but both of their newcomers were signed up before the summer transfer season even kicked off. United tied up a deal for Fulham center back Chris Smalling in January, and in April, a deal was agreed for Mexican striker Javier Hernandez.

On the injury and fitness front, both sides are dealing with a number of players needing to regain fitness after taking part in the World Cup, but there are also some injury concerns as well.

This will mark the fourth time that United and Chelsea have faced off in the Community Shield, and it’s worth noting that all three previous meetings have come down to penalties. In 1997, Manchester United won 4-2 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1, and they repeated the feat 10 years later, winning 3-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, before Chelsea came out victorious in last year’s shootout.

Will we see penalties decide the Community Shield for the fourth year in a row and for the fourth straight time between these two Premier League rivals? Even if that’s not the case, expect some drama, as this showdown promises to be entertaining and intense.
