The coincidence between the Baga attack, the launch of PMB campaign and the quickness of PDP release is worrisome. Just as there are insinuations that herdsmen attacks reduced after PDP selected a Fulani herdsman as its presidential candidate, there could be a correlation between the the campaign launch and Baga attack.

Hmmmm...

Food for thought.

This your commentary is very unfortunate..

The military had been fighting terrorists since 2009 and any attempt to politicize the issue is only a manifestation of mischief .

Some people are so daft to believe that a change of govt will automatically end insurgency,as if they are going to import fresh soldiers from outside Nigeria.

Even America has been frighting terrorists for decades without finality.

Exactly.

Even if every Nigerian converts to Islam tomorrow...and we elect a super fervernt Muslim as our Head of State...them Boko guys will still keep on fighting...because they think it is not good enough.

We need to focus ,in my opinion, on building a good 'asymetric warfare capability' for our Army, improving instituions like the Army and Police, and ensuring good governance at all levels. Boring...but much needed.

This is the manifestation of education without wisdom and common sense..you want to use America as a yardstick? Is America battling terrorism in her land? Are any terror group holding any inch of American soil? You call people daft for wanting to try out a new person/people with a (probably) different approach to a problem? So to you wisdom is trying the same thing over and over again without result?

[And Buhari is taking us to the next level?quote author=BlacSmit post=74251506]Militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) group have hoisted their flag in a Nigerian town after seizing control of it, three residents have told the BBC.

Hundreds of people have fled the fishing town of Baga after the militants overran it on Wednesday night, the residents said.

The militants seized weapons from a military base, and torched a naval base on the shores of Lake Chad, they said.

The military denied Baga had fallen, saying the attack had been repelled.

But PRNigeria, an agency well-connected with the military, quoted an intelligence officer as saying that troops had made a "tactical withdrawal" from their base after coming under attack.

"The Nigerian Air Force in response to distress call quickly mobilised military aircraft and flew over 20 sorties [on] Wednesday night and throughout Thursday," it quoted the unnamed officer as saying.

A resident, who spoke to the BBC after he fled Baga, said a militant led the morning prayer on Thursday at his mosque in the town.

Other armed militants were present at the mosque, and prayed there too, the resident said.

The militants told the congregation that civilians would not be targeted and were free to leave the town, he added.

The fighters identified themselves as being members of the Islamic State's West Africa Province (Iswap), an IS affiliate which has distanced itself from Boko Haram, the main insurgent group in north-eastern Nigeria.

The militants had captured heavy armoured tanks, boats and a large cache of weapons during the raid on the military and naval bases, other residents said.

The military base was the local headquarters of the multinational task force, which includes troops from neighbouring states fighting the militants, the residents added.

Some troops fled with civilians, as the militants stormed the town, in north-eastern Borno state, on Wednesday night, the residents said.

In a statement on Thursday, Nigerian army spokesman Sani Usman confirmed the attack on the military base but said the militants had been pushed back after troops put up a "determined fight".

"Similarly, a search and rescue team has been constituted. The Nigerian Air Force component has also been mobilised and are engaging the fleeing terrorists. Unfortunately, a naval personnel was killed in action," he added.

January 2015, Boko Haram took control of the town after killing hundreds of residents and forcing thousands to flee.

Baga - and most other territory seized by the militants - was later retaken by the army.

Some analysts fear there will be an escalation of attacks by the militants in the run-up to elections next year.

President Muhammdu Buhari, who is seeking a second term, took office in 2015 with a promise to defeat the militants.

At the launch of his re-election campaign on Friday in the southern city of Uyo, he said the militants had lost much territory since he took office.

"We are going to eventually clear them out of the country," he said, without referring to the ongoing fighting in Baga.

I saw this on the BBC and thought you should see it:

I have a better example for thee

1.India...battling terror groups like Communist gureillas, Kashmiri separatists, Assamese separatists, and at one time, Tamil separatists.

2.Sri Lanka....battled Tamil separatists for 25 years.

3.Colombia...battled the FARC for over 40 years, still battling a spin off group.

4.The UK. Battled Northern Irish fighters for 30-40 years. Has battled Welsh separatists in the past.

5.Zimbabwe...during White rule...battled black Freedom fighters for 13 years. Fighting ended with peace treaty, and eventual black led rule in 1980.

There are many more examples.

people like you are not supposed to be calling themselves Nigerians. how much have they given you for all this hallucinations? I agree the situation was worse under Gej that is why he was voted out. we are not supposed to be making comparisons about whose tenure's Boko Haram is better or worse but rather be praying for the fight to be won.
for the records, the confidence level of these terrorists has drastically increased in recent times. infact, they now have the guts to be killing our soldiers, filming it and even posting it for public belief in case anyone wants to deny as the military would always hide the truth. gej did his best and left the stage for PMB to play his own part. am afraid it's getting worse because almost everything APC accused the past administration is trippled under the general. we had only Boko Haram in Borno, yobe and adamawa, and a few areas in middle belt States of plateau and Benue but today it is in high gear in zamfara, sokoto taraba, and Kaduna, Niger, kogi, and many other places across the country. what then are your parameters for saying it was worse under Gej!

Only a foolish and stupid man will think that the present Nigeria 's military will defeat Boko Haram.

Nigeria army can not fight guerrilla war especially in such a vast and porous territory.
