Buhari Visit: A’Ibom 5,000 Sacked Teachers Shake Int’l Stadium … Declare Support For Nsima Ekere, Akpabio

5,000 teachers allegedly sacked by Governor Udom Emmanuel were at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday to openly declare support for Obong Nsima Ekere, the Akwa Ibom State Gubernatorial Candidate for the All Progressive Congress, APC, and former governor Godswill Akpabio. And their presence was acknowledged amidst mixed-feelings of cheers and sympathy.

In a stadium filled to the capacity, thousands of the aggrieved teachers filed out with banner expressing their solidarity for the APC candidates starting from President Muhammadu Buhari, Obong Nsima Ekere to Godswill Akpabio, whose administration recruited them into the State Secondary Education Board, SSEB.

Other larger groups that joined the APC fold during the President Muhammadu Buhari reelection campaign flag-off weekend include 20,000 Ibom All Farmers led by Austin Ndaeyo; 10,000 former members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, from Essien Udim local government area; 1,500 former PDP members from Ibesikpo Asutan local government; hundreds of former councilors from Etim Ekpo local government area, and many other groups that turned out in vast numbers.

Speaking with The Sensor, the coordinator of the 5,000 sacked teachers, Mr. Sunday Akpan, said the teachers whose appointments were wrongfully terminated by the incumbent state governor, will come out en masse to mobilize their friends, relatives and others to vote massively for the APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections.

Akpan expressed optimism that with the APC taking over power in the coming months, their teaching job will be secured as they will all be reinstated.

Speaking further, he described Obong Nsima Ekere as people-oriented leader, a man that has the interest of Akwa Ibom people heart, and a man who would not resort to deriding the image of Akwa Ibom graduates by describing them as being unqualified and unemployable.

The coordinator also said why they decide to throw their weight behind Senator Godswill Akpabio is because of his amiable character and immense passion for education.

“He is a man of good character; a man that loves education and has the will to improve the educational system in Akwa Ibom State.  He saw the need to employ more hands in order to actualize his dreams in educational sector, and on that regard, we were employed,” he said.

It would be recalled that about 5,000 applicants were given Offer of Appointment Letter into Pensionable Establishment dated 2nd February, 2015 in line with Chapter 2 of the Akwa Ibom State Public Service Rule (2010 edition).They were employed as Master/Mistress Grade II, on Salary Grade Level 08, Step 2 with a commencing salary of N369,324.48 per annum. Their Letters of Appointment were eventually issued to them on 15th April, 2015 with effect from 1st April, 2015. 

But on 30th October 2016, the Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Ekereobong Akpan according to the directive from Governor Udom Emmanuel, made to be announced on the radio service of Akwa Ibom Broadcasting Corporation (AKBC) the termination of appointment of 5,000 teachers, an event that pitches the state government against the aggrieved teachers in a legal battle.
