THE ABACUS BRAIN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Abacus program is an ancient way of calculating which have been proven that it helps the development of a child's brain between the ages of 4-16. In this thread, i will be teaching you how to use the POKE ROUTINE in class.

We have basically two methods of teaching the abacus program:
1. POKE ROUTINE
2. SOROBAN ROUTINE. The Soroban routine is divided in to two parts which are:
a. SOROBAN MATHS and
b. SOROBAN CAECUS.

In the Poke routine, we use our fingers to first count 1 to 99. owing to the fact we can only count in two digits with our hands, we can only add and subtract Tens and unit numbers physically with our hands but in an advanced level(like children in Basic 4), they can add, multiply and divide numbers with their fingers up to 9999. In this thread, i will stick to the simple addition and multiplication only.

In the Soroban Routine, we use an instrument called the SOROBAN (popularly called ABACUS) to add, subtract, multiply, divide, square, cube and find perfect root of any number at all.

When we use the soroban physically to calculate, we call it SOROBAN MATHS; but when we imagine it for calculation, we call it SOROBAN CAECUS.

The aim of the program is to make the children imagine the soroban with deep concentration for calculation and you know concentration is the knob to brain development.

So in Poke routine, we represent the Tens with the left hand simply because the left is on the side where we right Tens while the right hand is called the unit hand for the same reason.

To count 0-9, we do as in the pictures below:
