It is not a surprise that New Year’s Resolution has become a tradition amongst people of the present times.

History has it that new Year’s Resolution is a tradition common in ancient times where, on the first day of the year, people resolve to change from bad habits or behavior in order to attain some personal or religious goals.

Some of these resolutions are made in sacred places (like religious buildings and places of worship) while others write theirs down and tick them off as they attain any of those goals. In our dispensation, it is not uncommon to see people reflecting on the past year and making a decision to change for the better.

Halfway, they forget about their resolutions and move on as if no oath was taken nor anything written down.

Funny enough, some ladies (and gentlemen too) fancy adding marriage as one of their resolutions and end up frustrated at the end of the year.

New Year’s Resolution is not for selfish reasons but actually for the betterment of the person and how the person’s actions and inaction affect the people around them.

The sad truth is that it is never easy to break bad habits because it will take more than just a New Year’s Resolution to appease the gods. However, a lot of people make the mistake of jettisoning their vows just because things didn’t go their way.

I have no easy solutions to give but I will tell you three things you can do when it comes to New Year’s Resolution and they have helped me over the years.
Make a Simple List:

If you must make resolutions at the start of each year, it is advisable to place plausible things you can achieve within the year.

Making eutopic and unrealizable goals is not just bad in paper, it is detrimental for your mental and physical health because of rampant cases of frustration and depression.

A simple list will enable you know if you are meeting up with your expectations and after which you can aspire to include medium-scale resolutions.
Make Short Term Goals:

In order to keep tab of your achievements, it will be best to compile short terms goals you can achieve way before the end of the year. It is not as if long term goals are not important but if you come from a family of people like me who forget their New Year’s Resolution before the second week of January, you will understand why you should make a short term goal.
Keep the List Short:

In order to achieve much from whatever resolution, it is always advisable to keep them short. On a scale of 1-10, five (5) is a good number of things to be placed on your New Year’s Resolution List.

It is not as those things on the list are the only things you will or can achieve within the year but it will give you a sense of satisfaction for you to know that you finished what was on your list.

Ordinarily, I advise against New Year’s Resolution because research shows that 90% of people who do, don’t end up achieving 50% of what is on the list.

But if you must keep a list, these are three things you can do to make your wishes attainable and by the end of the year, you will be happy you did.

Welcome to a new year filled with pleasant surprises.
