Queen Elizabeth II and the New leader of the Commonwealth Prince Charles will fly to Kigali for the 2020 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting(CHOGM 2020).

The BBC said it had learned that Commonwealth leaders have chosen Rwanda to host their next heads of government meeting in 2020.

“Defeat for Fiji. 1st African venue since Uganda in 2007. Malaysia pulled out after PM Najib Razak decided not to come to London,” BBCs Diplomatic Correspondent James Landale twitted.

Every two years the meeting is held in a different member state and is chaired by that nation’s respective Prime Minister or President who becomes the Commonwealth Chair-in-Office until the next meeting.

In 2009, Rwanda was admitted to the Commonwealth during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago.

It was in 2008 that Rwanda applied to join the Commonwealth of Nations, and is only the second country without a British colonial past to be admitted to the group, which now numbers 54.

The other is Mozambique, a former Portugese colony.

In 2007, Neighbouring Uganda hosted the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and attracted a massive 3000 guests including the Queen.

For a country like Rwanda which has predominantly under the colonial influence of the Belgians and french, this CHOGM will be a major shift in many things.

Local 5-star hotels are going to adjust to suit king and Queen standards. For Example Rwanda’s major hotels have a presidential suit as the highest package.

But to host CHOGM most of these presidential suits will have to elevate to King size or queen size plus offering services fitting the Royal majesty.

However, Rwanda will require to work on significantly improving several things including; airport infrastructure, city road network, water supply, security and the chefs.

Meanwhile, Rwanda hosts the largest conference facility in the region – The Kigali Convention Centre worth $300 million.

It comprises of a five-star hotel with 292 rooms, a conference hall that can host 5,500 people, several meeting rooms, as well as an office park. With this facility supported by other international standard hotels, Rwanda is capable of hosting 3000 guests for CHOGM2020.

The country is working hard round the clock to complete its largest airport facility- Bugesera International Airport estimated to cost a whooping $800million.

The British engineering firm, TPS Consult Plc., was commissioned to carry out a feasibility study and design the new airport.

According to the TPS report, the new airport would be able to handle one million passengers and 150 million tonnes of cargo annually during its first phase.
